High quality multi-author contribution

As any serious student who buys advanced science texts knows, edited books with many authors are almost always dismal. Cheetham & Day's book is a rare exception. If you seek a solid state chemistry text, you still can't find anything that is fully satisfactory. An authoritative book that has both the depth and breadth necessary to fill that role still doesn't exist, but this book is one of a couple that are worth buying in the meantime.

Great book for basic knowledge and reference on techniques

It's a great introductory and quick reference book. Helps speed up learning curve for solid state experimentalist beginners (early year grad-students, like myself)
