Harry Potter: Magical Places from the Films

I have always thought that the Harry Potter movies have some of the best production design of any films, and so a book dedicated to highlighting that work is a must-own in my view. The book is full of color photos and conceptual artwork. Each location also has plenty of text discussing the context in which each location appears in the films as well as the design process.

3. King's Cross Station - includes Platform Nine and Three-Quarters and the Hogwarts Express

Highly recommended for Harry Potter fans

[[VIDEOID:5c4d369eaa46b2473b8c66e2489a6a10]]Harry Potter: Magical Places from the Films is actually one of the books from the Harry Potter Page to Screen Collector's Edition. In that collector's edition, the book was titled Environments Envisioned: Building Fantastic Sets and Scouting Dramatic Locations. I don't have the collector's edition, so I can't compare the exact contents, so I'll just talk about this book alone.

I only have the standard edition of Harry Potter Page to Screen so the first thing I want to say is it's great to have this book sold separately rather than bundling it into the pricey collector's edition. Sure it took a long time for it for come out but it's more affordable, and all fans can enjoy the book now.

This is a large 208-page hardcover film companion. The cover has a nice design with trimmings embossed. The presentation is beautiful and the same can be said about the layout inside. The pages are filled with behind the scenes photography, film stills and lots of commentary. Fans will no doubt find it extremely satisfying to delve into the information and revisit the Harry Potter world again -- I know I did.

This book focuses on the locations and sets. There are environment concept art, stories on how the sets were build, what was filmed there, how the props were created, how the sets relate to the movie and the book, and many other bits of interesting details.

There are nine chapters and they are

Dursley's House
Diagon Alley
King's Cross Station
Hogwarts Castle
Hogwarts Classrooms and Offices
Hogwarts Grounds
Hogsmeade
Ministry of Magic
Wizarding Homes

Highly recommended to all Harry Potter fans. It's the only way to "visit" all the grounds without being growled by Snape.

Another thing to note is there are two publishers for this book, Harper Design and Titan Books. Depending on where you buy it, the price of the book will differ.

A Must Have Book for Every Harry Potter Fan

If there were a 6th Star, this book would deserve it in my estimation. It must have taken forever to compile and write.Jody Revenson is to be commended for her detail and research. For ANY Harry Potter fan (I am 80! - and after I absorbed every word and illustration, my grandchildren - 20 and 30 somethings - are now in line to do the same.) I even read every word on the last page. There is a UK group which is donating not one, but two trees, for each tree used in the printing of this book! The pages are crammed full of the intricate original black and white illustrations/plans for the H.P. sets, then beautiful color illustrations, and finally actual photos of the cast and crew at the various venues or studio sets. Even the notes explaining each image are chock full of little- known tidbits of information. It was not just my age that caused me to dig out the magnifying glass to delve deeper into each photo. My family also peered into each nook and cranny to see what was on a bed stand or book case, commisioned tapestry, or detail of Oxford architecture. It is a thick book on lovely paper and with a true Harry Potteresque embossed "leather" cover. Run, don't walk to your nearest bookstore, if you care at all for the true epic of our time - J.K.Rowling and her magnificent story!

A CIA plot to spread disinformation among Soviet southern republics is the brainchild of aging CIA operative Edward Stone, who neglects to inform his superiors of his plans. Stone recruits bored CIA Istanbul bureau chief Alan Taylor and fledgling CIA agent Anna Barnes, and the three of them set off to stir up the Uzbeks, Azerbaijanis, and Armenians. Ultimately, the CIA discovers Stone's adventure and scrubs the operation, leaving Taylor and Barnes to fend for themselves. At no time does this come across as a serious spy thriller. The main characters, Taylor and Barnes, are not very appealing, and the plot suggests little in the way of intrigue and excitement. If author Ignatius intended to write a hair-raising, action-packed spy thriller, he has missed the mark. His Agents of Innocence (LJ 9/15/87) was a success; Siro is not. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 12/90.

The best description of Armenia in fiction -- and much more

I read SIRO for one reason only: it was the only work of fiction I could find that had scenes set in Armenia. Even if that leaves you indifferent, this is an excellent spy novel and well worth reading. Ignatius's research -- geographical, historical, and organizational -- is superb. While his story briefly spins into something not quite believable, his underlying description of the CIA and its employees rings true. Ignatius neither glorifies nor deamonizes them, he simply recounts what their lives must be like and what he believes they must feel.
And if you are one of the rare few that is interested in Armenia as a backdrop for at least part of a novel, you will not be disapointed. Late in the novel we are introduced to Armenian character, and we are eventually transported to Armenia with some of the characters. Ignatius gets nearly every detail right, and it was as though I had actually visited Armenia, however briefly.

Another god one by David Ignatitus. Not great but good. Story really picks up in the second half. i just read it so it was a little dated, but still worth the read. Agents of Innocence is still the first and best place to start if you have not read any of his novels. His fiction is based on fact and if you read his column, you know nobody seems to have better sources in regard to what is going in the spy world.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN INTERESTING READ THAT KEEPS YOU TURNING THE PAGES SIRO IS FOR YOU. I HAVE ENJOYED READING ALL OF DAVID IGATIUS BOOKS BECAUSE THEY RELATE TO REAL LIFE EVENTS, ARE EDUCATIONAL, AND HAVE SUCH WONDERFUL PLOTS. I COULDN'T PUT THIS ONE DOWN. ALTHOUGH THE ENDING WAS A LITTLE UNREALISTIC IT WAS STILL A GOOD READ.

Can i have a dance?

Loved reading this short but hot story. Even though it was short Ava writes her characters so well you seriously feel their connection in a few sentences that takes full length novels the whole book to do! I loved it. Not only was it well written it was freaking hot!

If your looking for a not overly cheesy short sexy read...this one is for you!

Is it hot in here? Susan leaves her bachelorette party at a Las Vagas strip club determined to be a good girl the night before her wedding. But the best laid plans... Pun intended. Who doesn't fantasize about a hot male stripper? This is a great hot short story.

Susan is on her bachelorette party in Vegas and her maid of honour has insisted that they go to a strip club. Little does she know that in going there she will end up having the time of her life and a night she will never forget with one of the dancers she can’t get out of her head.

Even with it being a short read I found that it was nicely paced. Not rushing straight into the sex that some writers do tend to do, but letting the story guide you to where you are hoping it will go. You can feel the chemistry between Susan and Mark slowly build and know right from the start that Mark is trying to seduce her – not that she is complaining much!

I like the way the tension builds between them when he shows her some of his ‘dance’ moves in private. You can see her resolve to leave slowly fall away until she is completely under his spell. With how his physique is described you can see why she would be. She leaves it all up to him to make to first bold move to kiss her but the second he does she comes out of herself and holds her own. Together they make a bit of a passion hungry pair and even though you don’t know what they get up to in the whole time they are together you can get a pretty good idea.

I like the ending line where you know that she will keep the memory of what happened between them for a while to come. He will now defiantly take the place of the romance book cover guy in her fantasies when she needs a bit of a pick me up. Good rounded characters that you would be interested in seeing how life turns out for them.

A BOOK YOU HAVE TO READ

I recently lost my lover and she said the spark was gone. I was very worried because I loved her more than anything and I couldn't get over her as much as I wanted. I started to get depressed, I couldn't sleep, eat or enjoy myself properly. It burnt my heart when I saw her hanging out with other guys and it seemed like she had forgotten me. Thank god I found this book, it helped me a LOT. it surely was a long process but thanks to all those tips and warnings given there, I was able to maintain my relationship and get her back. This is a thorough book that works!

I love this book! It not only teaches you the tips and tricks of how to regain the interest of your ex, but others as well. It doesn't stop there though. It makes you question and analyze whether you should want your ex back in the first place. I like the fact that it makes you think and become a better person for having done so. I would highly recommend it to anyone. I was offered this book through a promotion that gave me the book in exchange for my honest opinion.

All of the information can easily be found online (for free, I might add). The author does not sound like an expert on the topic. It sounds like he just threw together common sense tips he found from the internet. He doesn't go into a lot of detail about his strategies, but rather glazes over a lot of obvious topics. Put your money towards another book, my friends. This one will disappoint you.

More advanced that an introduction

This text is much more advanced than a introduction to research methods, although it does have an excellent first chapter that discusses the challenges of research in communication, and the second chapter discusses research problems. After chapter three, the Reinhard goes deep into measurements and arguments in research. The overviews of the different types of research such as textual analysis, qualitative methods, content analysis, etc. are quite involved.

This book should be two volumes and should be used over a two-semester class, not trying to cover all the material in one semester. Research is extremely involved and this text covers all the aspects, but it is too much for a first-level college course.

But takes lots of time to fully understand some contents.
As a compiliation of diverse theories, the book requires you to make your own notes for consistency.
If you study communication of any sorts, it will be a great help to you. But just read it through once and hop onto another book related to the specific topic you have to dig in.

So disappointing . . .

Hoped to find the film script adaption by Gore Vidal and Tennessee Williams of the Tennessee Williams' play, "Suddenly Last Summer". Unfortunately, this is NOT it. Missing the opening scent with the wonderful lines from Hepburn as she descends from the elevator chair and the superb coda to the final sequence of the film. Not sure why this isn't available. Perhaps, internecine rivalry between the Williams and Gore estates? Boo-hoo.

There are many NoSQL data stores used by big data applications. Cassandra is one of the most widely used NoSQL data stores that is frequently used by a huge number of heavy duty Internet-scale applications. Unlike the RDBMS world, the NoSQL landscape is very diverse and there is no one way to model data stores. This mandates the need to have good solutions to commonly seen data store design problems. Cassandra addresses such common problems simply.

If you are new to Cassandra but well-versed in RDBMS modeling and design, then it is natural to model data in the same way in Cassandra, resulting in poorly performing applications and losing the real purpose of Cassandra. If you want to learn to make the most of Cassandra, this book is for you.

This book starts with strategies to integrate Cassandra with other legacy data stores and progresses to the ways in which a migration from RDBMS to Cassandra can be accomplished. The journey continues with ideas to migrate data from cache solutions to Cassandra. With this, the stage is set and the book moves on to some of the most commonly seen problems in applications when dealing with consistency, availability, and partition tolerance guarantees.

Cassandra is exceptionally good at dealing with temporal data and patterns such as the time-series pattern and log pattern, which are covered next. Many NoSQL data stores fail miserably when a huge amount of data is read for analytical purposes, but Cassandra is different in this regard. Keeping analytical needs in mind, you'll walk through different and interesting design patterns.

Rajanarayanan Thottuvaikkatumana

Rajanarayanan Thottuvaikkatumana, "Raj", is a seasoned technologist with more than 23 years of software development experience at various multinational companies. He has lived and worked in India, Singapore, and the USA, and is presently based out of the UK. His experience includes architecting, designing, and developing software applications. He has worked on various technologies including major databases, application development platforms, web technologies, and big data technologies. Since 2000 onwards, he has been working mainly in Java-based technologies, and has been doing heavy-duty server-side programming in Java and Scala. He has worked on very highly concurrent, highly distributed, and high-transaction-volume systems with NoSQL data stores such as Cassandra and Riak and caching technologies such as Redis, Ehcache, and Chronicle Map. Raj has a lot of experience in integrating Cassandra with Spark and has shared the Scala code repository on GitHub. Raj holds one master's degree in Mathematics and one master's degree in Computer Information Systems, and has many certifications in ITIL and Cloud Computing to his credit. Apart from all this, Raj is a prolific corporate trainer on various technical subjects and has contributed to the Apache Cassandra project. When not working with computers, Raj watches a lot of tennis and he is an avid listener of classical music. Even though Raj has worked on many white papers and training materials, this is his first publication in the form of a book.

Cassandra Design Patterns is a superb introduction to Cassandra, for anyone approaching the subject from a traditional RDBMS background. All the important fundamental concepts are explained clearly and concisely, and in RDBMS terms.

The book provides historical context surrounding the application design, which helps the reader to grasp the reasons behind Cassandra design decisions. I think this results in a more complete understanding of the subject for the reader. The author does this without getting bogged down or including irrelevant details.

Particular attention is paid throughout the book to use cases where the application is deployed as a replacement for, or in operation with, existing non-distributed storage systems. The author methodically works over a number of categories of real-world uses, and works out each example completely. The task of applying these examples is discussed in each case.

My favourite aspect of the book is the approach to the use cases: the author begins by discussing the relevant practical application, and then carefully deconstructs it down into a Cassandra setup. He makes sure to mention any obscure 'gotchas' or tweaks to the setup that may be necessary in certain circumstances.
