Wonderful resource for children & adults

This book will give you and your children incredible knowledge of both science and animals while never having to worry about evolution theories popping up in the text. This would make great supplemental material in homeschooling, be a wonderful reference book and children from elementary to high school students can use it and enjoy it. It includes information about the smallest microscopic worms to the largest animals God ever created, the whales. Filled with fascinating facts and intriguing animal records this book will teach you and your child all about the amazing animals God created. Our children love to learn about animals and are fascinated by their behaviors, habitats and lives. We often found the kids sitting in the floor reading this book together. This book covers simple animals, worms/snails/starfish, insects & other anthropods, fish, amphibians and reptiles, birds and mammals. The kids learned interesting things about animals like: The giant clam, tridacna, lives in Pacific Ocean and its shell can be over 4 feet in length and it can weigh as much as 725 pounds! Our 6 year old loved the Giant Anteater information as that is currently his favorite animal. And want to know which animal our kids were most intrigued by so far? Look up "Gulper Eel" ~ The picture of it in this book was so fascinating to them we actually spent a whole afternoon looking up more about it online!

The Great Big Book of Everything

My 2 year old daughter loves this book. We bought it for her because she watches Stanley on Disney Channel and wanted a "Great Big Book of Everything" just like Stanley. This book fits the bill. While there is a lot of textual information about the animals, a younger child can enjoy just looking at the pictures, which generally fill up over half of the pages. My daughter is now at the point where she will ask me what animal I like, and then she will find it in the book.

The only criticism I have of the book is that the first couple sections are on simple animals like worms, and that they are given equal time to mammals, which is what younger children are most interested in.

About the Author

G. Hussein Rassool (PhD, University of London) is Head of Department, Faculty of Psychology, Islamic Online University, responsible for the Certificate, Diploma and BA (Psychology from an Islamic Perspective). He is the Executive Director & Consultant of Sakina Counselling Institute & Research. He is an independent consultant in Addiction and Mental Health. He was Professor of Addiction and Mental Health, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. His previous experience was as a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Addictive Behaviour & Psychological Medicine, Centre for Addiction Studies, St George’s Hospital Medical School (University of London), UK. During his career, he has a been awarded a number of honours and was an editorial member of a number of prestigious international journals. He has published extensively and is an author /editor of eight books.

An Outstanding Textbook and Introduction

I have taught introductory courses in world religions for almost 15 years. This book is excellent, and I've used it in many of my courses. This book takes the two-volume World Religions text edited by the late Professor Will Oxtoby, and both condenses it into one volume and updates it. There is a new second edition of this book that was edited by Professor Alan Segal shortly before his death, and Amazon shows that edition as being available in December 2011.
I have not been able to find another single volume that does what this book does. It introduces students to the major religious traditions of the world, and does so in manageable chapters of about 60 pages each. Unlike other books, it doesn't skimp on the details, and provides all of the important information (people, places, texts, dates, etc. that are important to each religion) that students need to properly understand the world's religions. The authors of each chapter are recognized authorities on the religions that they write about (full disclosure, I'm the co-author, along with Mahmoud Ayoub, of the chapter on Islam), and all of them are excellent teachers. There are many illustrations, splash pages, text boxes, and different colours used to make the book visually appealing. This is an outstanding introduction to the religions of the world and my students love it.

This was definitely a VERY informative book. However, some of the text was hard to understand. It just took a little more in depth reading to figure out but overall I was very satisfied. It taught my a lot about religions, and I'd recommend it as a college course textbook.

difficult textbook for introductory level world religions course

I have taught introduction to world religions at the undergraduate level for over 15 years, and have used many different world religions textbooks during that time. This particular textbook is not written for undergraduate readers. It's more appropriate as an introduction to world religions for readers with expertise in philosophy, anthropology, history, even areas of religious studies that don't deal with comparison of religious traditions. I have been using this text this semester, and our students are not stupid, but they're struggling with many of the discussions in the text, simply because the writers have pitched their prose to a learned audience with grounding in humanities, social sciences, etc. I found the textbook helpful to me, as the instructor, in giving me information that I could then weave into lectures, but I won't use it again for undergraduate students. there are much better textbooks on the market to introduce undergraduates to the study of religion as well as religious traditions.

Interesting Ideas

I have read extensively about Kriya Yoga, but this is the first time I have seen anyone attempt to equate Kriya to the original Catholic Mass! He also has some radical ideas about sexual sublimation. Many books can be found with more extensive information about Kriya yoga that will serve the interested reader much better. Most of these books are offered without charge.
