About the Author
Born in England in 1944, Storm Thorgerson grew up with Pink Floyd’s Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, and David Gilmore, a relationship that proved instrumental to his career as an album cover designer. Before launching his own StormStudios in 1990, Thorgerson designed hundreds of covers through the Hipgnosis design firm, creating some of the greatest and most recognizable album art of all time in the process. He died in 2013 at the age of sixy-nine.

You'll never look at a grill the same way....

As a native of the Argentine pampas living in the US, I couldn't help feeling sorry for all those who had never tasted a real barbecue, seasoned and cooked in the Argentine way. But don't despair! Just buy Siete Fuegos [either the English or the Spanish version] and follow Mr. Mallmann's directions. From the appetizers to the desserts, you'll be amazed at the variety and simplicity of all his dishes! I can guarantee you two things a) you'll never go back to your usual grilling technique b) pretty soon, you'll find that your own barbecued dishes are much better than what you get at expensive restaurants. Makes me not want to eat ever again!

I've got my first edition of this book in Buenos Aires, but it turned as a gift to a good friend. When i saw it on Amazon, i quickly ordered another copy.

Mr. Malmann, besides his brilliant career as an international Michelin starred chef, has passion for his origins. You will learn from an Argentinean how to cook under fire, and from one of the best Argentinean cooks. The only problem you will have with this book is to find proper space for setting up your fire. I live in an apartment, but the book stands on my coffee table to remind me about how good life is.

This book is not only a recipes book. It teaches us about life.

He's the best

The book describes everything you have to know about authentic southamerican barbecues. Mallman describes materials, procedures and feelings related to this type of cooking, together with fantastic pictures. It's definitely the best book on the topic, it's even more than you expect. And the recipes are soooooo good. Having prepared "chivitos" all my life I followed his tips and found there's so much I can improve.

Expurgated

Although I can understand Atchity's intention to cover to as many authors as possible for an anthology on classical Greek authors, I can't understand his decision to include little to nothing by Plato and Aristotle. Small excerpts from Plato's "Republic" and Aristotle's "Poetics" -- that's it??? Given their breadth of work and strength of influence, any volume that proclaims itself "THE Classical Greek Reader" should have included much more from Plato and Aristotle. Atchity should have omitted some of the (many) more obscure authors.

Musty Translations

Why did Oxford, in 1996, reprint prose translations from Kathleen Freeman's 1926 "Life and Work of Solon," with their cries of "Yea!" and "Ye glorious children of Memory"? Couldn't it get the rights to West's 1993 "Greek Lyric Poetry" at least (also published by Oxford)? More disconcertingly, we get an English Empedocles here of the vintages 1880 and 1898. Most of the major poets fare better, but Sophocles' "Antigone" is in H.R. Fairclough and A.T. Murray's 1902 Wardour Street ("didst thou") version.

With no reservations, I can declare this a very poorly conceived anthology. Anyone would do better to buy up a bunch of good translations in used paperbacks.

If you absolutely had to have an anthology, I'm not sure what is best, but "The Norton Book of Classical Literature," ed. B.M.W. Knox, is certainly far better.

All the basic principles and facts in a particular area are presented in a clear and straightforward style, to produce concise yet comprehensive accounts of topics covered in both core and specialist courses. This book introduces a logical approach for the design of synthetic routes to reasonably complex organic molecules from simple starting materials. It describes the concept of 'retrosynthesis', which allows suitable simple starting materials to be identified; the importance of bond polarity and functional group interconversions; how to find an effective route to a target molecule containing more than one functional group; and valuable strategies to adopt when designing syntheses. The text also includes a review of methods for the control of chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivity, and a discussion of protecting groups. Finally four syntheses of the pyrrolidine alkaloids are compared and contrasted using the principles described in the book. Practice examples are provided throughout the book.

91-Page small masterpiece on a large topic

Like many other items in this Oxford chemistry primers, this one is of particlar value among those heavy big volumes on this topic. As precise as it could be - 91 pages, it has covered all the major points of organic synthesis in terms of retrosynthesis analysis and selectivity, as well as representative published works. The authors also pay attention to touch on different reactions as many as possible - after all mastering reactions is a must for successful synthesis. The best feature is the logical presentation of the topic which allows the readers to actually enjoy reading without much difficulty - with gradual increase of depth to the final original publications. Of course such a volume is not intended for those who are very experienced in the art of organic synthesis. Rather, it could be very refreshing and helpful for the experienced ones to pick up this topic again after a while away from this field. Or it could serve as a valuable piece for an organic chemistry student prior to formal graduate level organic synthesis. Or test yourself if you understand all the material in this book - if the answer is yes, you should be a proud synthetic organic chemist already!
