About the Author

Sean Johnston is Reader in History of Science and Technology at the University of Glasgow, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Chartered Physicist (Institute of Physics).

He has worked as a scientist, researcher and development manager at North American and British firms and at the University of Leeds, and as an historian at the Universities of York and Glasgow.

Johnston is a recipient of the Paul Bunge Prize of the Hans R. Jenemann Foundation, administered by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker, for the history of scientific instruments and of the George E. Davis Medal of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, for a history of chemical engineering co-written with Colin Divall, and has been International Scholar of the Society for the History of Technology.

He lives in southern Scotland, where he teaches and researches the historical, social and philosophical aspects of science and technology.

Worth a read if you enjoy atomic history.

Interesting comparison of UK, Canadian, and US development of nuclear engineering as a profession. I am a nuclear engineer who enjoys reading accounts by the pioneers of the field in the late 40s and 50s. Although the authors conclusions will be unlikely to surprise anyone, I thought the side by side comparison of he three countries was well done.

Good Introductions

Prof. Alister McGrath is a moderately conservative theologian and an ordained minister in the Church of England. He has written a large number of works, some of which are quite technical and others which are more introductory in nature. The best thing about his introductory writings is that they don't presuppose a knowledge of the subject, but at the same time they aren't simplistic.
This work is a collection of four smaller introductory works by Prof. McGrath: (1) UNDERSTANDING DOCTRINE; (2) UNDERSTANDING THE TRINITY; (3) UNDERSTANDING JESUS; and (4) JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH. I think UNDERSTANDING DOCTRINE is the best because it makes a persuasive case for why doctrine -- and not just feelings -- matter.
One problem I have with this work, like some of Prof. McGrath's works, is that he frequently discusses Karl Barth (1886-1968) the well-known Swiss Reformed theologian. Barth was the principal player within the school known as "neo-orthodoxy." To some he is a towering writer of a more or less Evangelical bent, to others he is something of a modernist. Some traditional Calvinists, such as Gordon Clark and Cornelius Van Til, wrote works criticizing Barth from the Calvinist perspective. I'm not competent to say how faithful Barth was to the Reformed tradition, but Prof. McGrath owes it to his readers to point out that there is quite a controversy about this. Unfortunately he doesn't. (See, e.g., McGrath, HISTORICAL THEOLOGY, 238-39.) This book isn't a "mini" systematic theology. There are all sorts of important topics that Prof. McGrath doesn't discuss (such as ecclesiology and eschatology). Nonetheless, taken as a whole, it is a good introduction to Christianity from a Protestant perspective.

If he confirms what you already believe, you may enjoy it.

I bought this book at the recommendation of a Presbyterian minister with whom I was discussing the Trinity. The minister said McGrath could explain and prove the doctrine of the Trinity. In fact, he spends almost no time attempting to prove it. It is written for people who already believe it, but I'm not sure how much it actually would help such a person. He does all the usual reasoning by analogy without ever finding any analogy that actually works to explain the Trinity. He uses multiple contradictory analogies. He uses scripture passages in contradictory ways, using the same passage to mean one thing one place, and something opposite someplace else. I found it a hopeless muddle, but then, perhaps my expectations were too high. What can one really expect from a book that attempts to explain what even the author acknowledges is inexplicable?

It also seemed to me that the author does not exactly conform to an absolutely orthodox or creedal Trinitarianism. At times, he takes positions that sound modalistic, reasoning that the three "persons" of the Trinity are actually three "personas." But then, he goes on to contradict himself, which is not completely surprising as the doctrine is inherently contradictory, but left me unusure what he was really trying to say.

If you believe in the Trinity and want a fellow believer to meander around in speculations, some orthodox, some not, in a futile attempt to explain the incomprehensible to the lay reader, then it may be of some value to you. If you are looking for a book to prove the doctrine, either to yourself or someone else, that is not the author's intent.

Raymond D. Frost is a Professor of Management Information Systems at Ohio University. He has published scholarly papers in the information systems and marketing fields and is an associate editor of The Journal of Database Management. Frost is co-author of Building Effective Web Sites and the E-Marketing Guide. Dr. Frost teaches database, electronic commerce, and information design courses. He has received Ohio University’s Presidential, University Professor, College of Business, and Senior Class teaching awards. Dr. Frost is working on publications in data modeling and database pedagogy. He is co-author of a forthcoming book, A Visual Introduction to Database: An E-Business Perspective. Dr. Frost earned a doctorate in business administration and an M.S. in computer science at the University of Miami (Florida), and received his B.A. in philosophy at Swarthmore College.

Decent but lacks real-world applicability and nuts-and-bolts

This book provides a lot of background on e-marketing for someone who has little knowledge of marketing which is part of its downfall because it spends too much time on basics. What this book lacks is a detailed explanation of applicable material to prepare a person to create an e-marketing business plan and then effectively implement it with real world tools. Having read this book as part of an MBA program, I was disappointed at the lack of explanation on the process of connecting websites with social media with mobile devices, etc. Don't get me wrong, it touched on it, but I was looking for the nuts-and-bolts and this gave the view from 5000 feet.

Good book

I am using this book for my e-marketing class, and I have to say it is "O.K.". It is a very interesting book, but everything in it is black and white (isn't marketing usually more on the flashy, and colorful side?). The statistics and information in the book is very old (2011 ish).
Altogether good book, and I think I would even buy it without having to use it for class

About the Author

Suzy Young is Programme Leader of the Institute of Psychiatry's MSc. in Clinical Forensic Psychology and an Honorary Consultant Clinical Psychologist at Broadmoor Hospital. She has served as an expert witness in a number of high profile legal cases, including the Jill Dando case, the Billy Joe Friend case, the Albert Newman case. She has been involved in over a hundred legal cases referred by Defence solicitors, the Crown Prosecution Service, Customs Prosecution Service, the Police, the Criminal Cases Review Commission, the Home Office National Offender Management Service and directly by the Court. Her evidence has been influential in the Court of Appeal. Michael Kopelman is a Fellow of the of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists; he was a founder member of both the Memory Disorders Research Society and of the Society of Expert Witnesses; and he is a past-President of the British Neuropsychological Society and President-Elect of the International Neuropsychiatric Association. He has also served on the Board of the International Neuropsychological Society, 1999-2002. He has served on 12 editorial boards, including Brain, Neuropsychologia, and Cortex, and he has refereed for over 60 scientific journals. Gisli Gudjonsson has published about 300 journal articles, 50 book chapters, and six books. He pioneered the measurement of interrogative suggestibility and has published extensively in the areas of police interviewing, psychological vulnerabilities and false confession. He has acted as a consultant in a large number of cases for the police, prosecution, Criminal Cases Review Commission, and defence lawyers, and provided written or oral testimony in many high profile cases, including the Guildford Four the Birmingham Six., Judith Ward, Engin Raghip, Idris Ali, Donald Pendleton, Andrew Evans, Derek Bentley, Darren Hall, Peter Fell, John Flanagan, Patrick Nolan, the UDR 4 and Patrick Kane in Northern Ireland, and Raymond Gilmour in Scotland.

Fred E. Szabo is professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Concordia University in Canada. He completed his undergraduate studies at Oxford University under the guidance of Sir Michael Dummett and received a Ph.D. in mathematics from McGill University under the supervision of Joachim Lambek. After postdoctoral studies at Oxford University and visiting professorships at several European universities, he returned to Concordia University as a faculty member and dean of graduate studies. For more than twenty years, he developed methods for the teaching of mathematics with technology. In 2012 he was honored at the annual Wolfram Technology Conference for his work on "A New Kind of Learning" with a Wolfram Innovator Award. He is currently professor and Provost Fellow at Concordia University.

Strong in a few areas, but some serious gaps...

As someone interested in making a possible career change into the actuarial profession, I purchased this book hoping to get a feel for the day-to-day job experience of an actuary, as well as get some basic information about career paths and professional organizations. A large portion of the book consists of responses a survey the author undertook; daily tasks, salaries, opportunities and such. These are very useful and are presented without "analysis" by the author, leaving the reader to draw their own conclusions. However, the book really has very little background information - differences (textbook at least) between different business areas actuaries are employed, or information about what distinquishes an associate from a fellow, etc.

Upon further research I also discovered that some of the information has become out of date, as the professional organizations have recently added some additional requirements for advancement.

Overall I did find this book of some use in understanding more about the "daily life" of an actuary, but with the lack of background info and some information becoming outdated I cannot recommend it at the $40 price tag it currently carries.

Only worth buying if you dont have web access

This is a compilation of mainly everything you can read at the CAS and SOA websites. It's a colletions for FAQs that actuaries in the industry answered and some of the questions weren't answered well. The second half of the book discusses the examinations which is a little helpful but again you can go to the websites for that. This book was not worth the price I paid.

I haven't read the book, but......

Sorry to mislead. I haven't read the book, but having recently left the actuarial profession after 15 years, I can probably save you buying the book and tell you how to succeed in the profession:

Pass Exams!

No one cares about your personality, leadership skills, or anything else, when it comes down to it. It doesn't matter how good you are at your work related activities. In this profession, he/she who has the credentials is king/queen, and will get all opportunities for advancement. If you don't have the credentials, you can be the greatest business person and personality on earth, and you will not be recognized for it (not in this profession, anyway). I speak from 15 years experience. If you are getting in this profession, don't let anything get in the way of exam progress. You should know, to succeed, you should be willing to sacrifice possibly a decade of your life sitting in a dark corner studying advanced mathematics. I kid you not. I left the profession, because in my opinion, the payoff was not worth the sacrifice. That is, there are people making more money, that didn't have to go through the exam hell actuaries go through.

Mr. Czernik holds numerous patents for sealing products, and he has written many influential papers in the field of sealing technology. He is a Fellow Member of the Society of Automotive Engineers. He is also the coauthor of Handbook of Fluid Sealing, published by McGraw-Hill.

The complexities of gaskets and gasket sealing can be enormous. Mr. Czernik has taken on this daunting dask and made the grade. The book highlights various target areas in the sealing world of gaskets and offers insight into the same area.

Amazing series

I first was introduced to this series years ago. I found the story of a mysterious hybrid by the name of Tynan to be incredibly intense. I quickly fell in love with the series and it was no wonder how I could wait patiently for the revised second edition. I nabbed this revision and it brought back fond memories. The story has again came out swinging and I just can't wait for more books if this brilliant series to be released.
