Robinson (Box Office Poison, Tricked) returns with his latest, a high-concept graphic novella. In 2010, mild-mannered software engineer Andrew Wicks goes to a hypnotist to quit smoking, but wakes up from his trance to find himself in high school in 1985. While the Peggy Sue Quits Smoking premise could have been disastrous, with this slim volume, Robinson cements his reputation as a master cartoonist. The art is exceptional. His characters are all visually distinct, with subtle facial expressions and body language. He uses layout and even lettering to establish mood and keep the reader firmly fixed through complicated shifts in time, place and perception. Two sequences—the initial hypnosis scene and a later confrontation between two characters—are bravura performances, using innovative but still clear ways of depicting complicated inner monologues. Unfortunately, while Robinson has mastered the graphic, his skill with the novel lags behind, with some wordy dialogue and occasional narrative clunkers: one piece of foreshadowing is so clumsy it reads better as a typographical error. When Robinson the writer catches up with Robinson the artist, watch out. Even with its flaws, this is still a master class in graphic storytelling. (July)

Grade 10 Up—Robinson is back with a concise gem that packs just as much punch as his lengthier titles. The premise here is nothing groundbreaking: Andy Wicks, a middle-aged family man, goes to a hypnosis clinic to break a 25-year smoking habit. As he mocks the ordeal as "mumbo jumbo," he is suddenly transformed into his 15-year-old self. With a 40-something mind still intact, he is forced to relive the horrors of algebra class, visits to the principal, elaborate social hierarchies, and, of course, intense sexual frustration. What makes Too Cool remarkable is the author's ability to revisit high school drama and reality bending in a lighthearted way yet with a depth and thoughtfulness that consistently underscore the plot. Robinson never trivializes adolescent angst. Instead, Andy's journey allows him to explore and understand the complex psychology behind his coming-of-age choices and behavior. That he has lived to see the results adds a compelling twist. Readers will gain perspective on mortality, family relationships, compassion, and love among bikini posters, gum-infested lockers, and family TV nights. As usual, Robinson's portraits perfectly underscore the intricacies of emotion in the story line, from the awkwardness of goofy permed-out and barely mustachioed teens to the anxiety of aging fathers with worry lines. Further, the artist's use of white pace, page composition, and flexible panels create a compelling sense of movement and a satisfying sense of flow. Robinson's best to date, but baffling title and presentation

"Too Cool to be Forgotten" is probably Alex Robinson's finest work to date, though at a scant 128 pages it's far too short. Maybe I'm just a spoiled reader after the chunky "Box Office Poison" and the similarly thick "Tricked," but there's easily enough conceptual meat here (guy goes in for hypnosis, wakes up back in high school) to match the scope of those books. While the book flies by, Robinson still manages to hit all of the right and expected notes, and some of the funniest and most touching moments are derived from the natural conflict of a man with 50 years' experience trying to do things the "right" way instead of the way that his teenage self would have done them.

One spoiler-free note about the book's title and presentation in general; the final act takes such a heartbreaking left turn that I sat and cried for almost ten minutes after I finished it, having recently dealt with a similar experience in my own life. It's sort of baffling that the book has such a wackity-schmackity title and joke ciggy-pack presentation when the emotional center of the story ends up being a sledgehammer to the center of the reader's chest, though maybe that's the idea.

Wonderful Cartoon Storytelling

There is a blurb on the back of this book that states something about the fact that no writer captures the pain, anger, happiness, and triumph of being a teen better except maybe Stan Lee, and boy is this ever true.

I dove into this book thinking it was going to be good, but I was blown away at how great it was. The art is A+. There is brilliant flashes of great cartooning. In some ways it reminds me of a Jeff Smith, using the panels to assist in telling an wonderful story.

The lettering is fun and understated, while being interesting to read and sometimes challenging when it serves the plot. There is a great scene when the main character is being hypnotized where Alex Robinson uses the lettering to spell out what he is hearing and thinking, then reverses chunks and spells everything out backwards for a bit as he delves into his sub conscience mind.

The story is A+ as well. It starts out with a middle-aged man who wants to quit smoking, quaintly, almost comical. Then he decides to try to get hypnotized to never want to smoke. This opens his life back to when he was in high school, but with the mind and thoughts of a middle-aged man. As he reflects and lives out his day as a 15 year old again, he tries to make amends and finds keys to his life in current days. Finally he finds a certain moment that he feels that he has to change in order to quit smoking. After that is done he learns of one last task that he must accomplish before he can be sent back to his life as a middle-aged man.

The ending is very emotional and sad, but good in a way. I got a bit teary myself for a second because I know a lot of the pain that our main character was going through. There is not much falling action after the emotional climax; the ending is almost totally understated, but I like it. After all of that, I was drained myself, so the ending keep sweetly and quickly.

This was definitely the best book of 2008 in my view. If you are a comic book fan or even just a fan of great storytelling and great cartooning, this is a book that is well worth picking up. I cannot imagine a comic book fan not having this on their shelf. It goes next to your Complete Bone book, your copy of Comic Book tattoo, and your Strangers in Paradise books.

Perfectly Walks the Line of Wittiness and Pathos

Too Cool to Be Forgotten has that perfect melding of title and cover that makes for a perfect image, so absolutely clever and funny that it begs to be read. Luckily, the story inside lives up to the hype of the outside imagery.

Andy Wicks wants to quit smoking. Now 40, he's been puffing away since he was 15, when he took his first drag while trying to look cool at a party. It led to a lifetime of addiction. As a full-grown man in middle age, with a wife and two daughters, he desperately wants to kick the habit, but he's found it difficult, if not impossible, in the past.

When his wife drags him to a hypnotist, he's not sure what to think. But he's willing to give anything a try, no matter how goofy it may seem. And so he finds himself in a center for holistic medicine undergoing a procedure he doesn't know what to make of--especially when he wakes from his trance as a 15-year-old in 1985. (Those who are math-inclined may notice that timing is a little off, which is most likely intentional: Either the modern-day portion of the story is set in 2010 or the numbers aren't meant to add up. It's probably the former, but this is a book that comes with the following disclaimer, so the latter is possible too: "Page 84 includes an error in which the protagonist . . . thinks the word "Dad" instead of "Did." This will not be corrected. . . . We apologize if the author's stubborn refusal to listen to reason, demands or threats at all diminished your enjoyment. . . .")

The author, Alex Robinson, has made a name for himself with the graphic novels Box Office Poison and Tricked. Here, he manages to deliver a perfectly subdued work that perfectly walks the line of wittiness and pathos. Alex isn't desperate to relive his teenage years--he barely made it out the first time--but he is determined to understand what he's doing here and why. When he gets the chance to amend his younger days and to approach his love life with the courage of an adult rather than an awkward teenager, he does so only for his own edification, not for revenge or for the opportunity to take advantage.

Robinson wisely saves the book's most tender moments for the riveting finale. The payoff is not so much a surprise--it can't be; it feels too right and too familiar--but it still catches the reader offguard.

Too Cool to Be Forgotten is full of some special touches too. Fans of sci-fi and fantasy who have contemplated the ramifications of time travel will appreciate Andy's dilemma regarding the perplexities of what's going on (like how much can he change in the past and still arrive at the future he knows?). Andy's amazement at the sheer potential that was present back in high school serves as a touching reminder of what brought him there in the first place, a need to quit something that was holding him back and threatening his future. The conclusion he ultimately reaches in this regard is the true emotional center of this excellent work.

About the Author

Ben is currently a Solutions Architect at Cloudera. During his time with Cloudera, he has worked in a consulting capacity to assist customers with their Hadoop deployments. Ben has worked with many Fortune 500 companies across multiple industries, including financial services, retail, and health care. His primary expertise is the planning, installation, configuration, and securing of customers' Hadoop clusters.

In addition to consulting responsibilities, Ben contributes a vast amount of technical writing on customer document deliverables, to include Hadoop best practices, security integration, and cluster administration.

Prior to Cloudera, Ben worked for the National Security Agency and with a defense contractor as a software engineer. During this time, Ben built applications that, among other things, integrated with enterprise security infrastructure to protect sensitive information.

Ben holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and a Master’s degree in Information Technology, with a focus on Information Assurance. Ben’s final Master’s project was focused on designing an enterprise IT infrastructure with a defense-in-depth approach.

Joey Echeverria is a Software Engineer at ScalingData where he builds the next generation of IT Operations Analytics on the Apache Hadoop platform. Joey is also a committer on the Kite SDK, an Apache-licensed data API for the Hadoop ecosystem. Joey was previously a Software Engineer at Cloudera where he contributed to a number of ASF projects including Apache Flume, Apache Sqoop, Apache Hadoop, and Apache HBase.

While at Cloudera, Joey also served as the Director of Federal FieldTechnical Services, overseeing the public sector Professional Servicesand Systems Engineering teams. Joey started at Cloudera as a SolutionsArchitect, where he helped customers to design, develop, and deployproduction Hadoop applications and clusters. When needed, he has also filled in for Cloudera’s support and training teams and has taughtCloudera’s administrator and Apache HBase courses.

Joey’s background is in building and deploying secure data processing applications, with the last 7 years focused on Hadoop-based applications. In the past, he has worked on resource constrained data processing, a clustered implementation of the Snort intrusiondetection system, and he built a distributed index system on Hadoopwhen he worked for NSA.

Comprehensive Coverage Of Hadoop Security

As a follow up to my basic into to Hadoop with Hadoop 2 Quick Start Guide, I wanted to get more detail on the security features available in the Hadoop ecosystem and this sounded like it fitted the bill and was recently published (June 2015) so figured it would be pretty up to date.

One thing that I immediately liked about the book is that apart from a very brief few pages of an intro to security concepts, it get straight into things, which for me is always a good indication taht there won't be much padding in the book.

The book first starts off with a section on security architecture starting with a basic look threat modelling for distributed systems, which is a nice touch as really threat modelling should be part of any security architecture discussion and even touching on this at a high level is great, as is puts the whole book in context.

The next chapter moves onto general security architectures in a Hadoop environment, covering network level segregation, OS level security and an overview of the different types of Hadoop node roles. This was a great start to the book as immediately it starts working through the different nodes, what user roles need access to them, what nodes can be segregated from direct access and how at a high level they interact for data loads and job submission.

The final chapter of the architecture section finishes up with an overview of Kerberos, which while initially seemed a bit strange, it becomes obvious why later on as Kerberos plays such a key role in Hadoop security. If you need to get up to speed quickly on Kerberos, I’d highly recommend Kerberos: A Network Authentication System… it’s a quick and easy read that I read over ten years ago and it’s still as good now as it was then.

The next section deep dives more into authentication and at this point the book gets straight into the hands on configuration guide, covering detailed configuration steps required to map Kerberos principles into the Hadoop world, how to map to local users, how user groups work in Hadoop and mapping to LDAP groups. The chapter then moves on to cover the various authentication protocols in use across the Hadoop ecosystem, before explaining the differences between simple and Kerberos authn and then a nice dive into token auth, including the flows of how delegation tokens are created to allow various systems to impersonate users. The chapter finishes off with a fully worked Kerberos authn configuration guide, which to be fair I skimmed over as I don’t need that level of detail at the moment.

The next chapter moves onto authz covering HDFS ACLs and extended ACLs and various service level authorisations before moving on to MapReduce (1 and 2) and YARN, and Zookeeper ACLs, HBase, and Oozie. There’s a few nice worked examples here of the effects of authz restrictions and what errors users will see when their access is restricted.

The book then moves on to cover Sentry, which is Apache’s attempt to centralise authz within the Hadoop ecosystem, which after reading through the previous few chapters it’s obvious it’s needed! The basic architecture on which Sentry works is covered and how it integrates with the various applications and then walks though how to configure each application to use Sentry. Again a very practical oriented approach is taken here with a lot of detail on the configuration steps.

The last chapter in this section covers the logging available by default in each of the various applications and their basic config. This is a quick chapter and really just goes to show the configuration aspect, rather than any analysis approaches to the logs.

The third section of the book moves onto data security, specifically to cover encryption of data in transit and at-rest, starting with great coverage of how HDFS file encryption works. What was particularly good in this chapter was the strong emphasis it places on the key management and also making the reader conscious of potential lack of encryption on temporary data such as logs. The second half of the chapter covers encryption of data in transit, mainly focusing on the configuration of SSL/TLS in the various applications in the ecosystem.

The next chapter is a short one and looks at security of data as it is loaded into the Hadoop ecosystem, covering both the confidentiality and integrity of the data, but mainly focusing on confidentiality/encryption. The following chapter then covers how client access of data in the Hadoop environment can be performed securely, focusing of course on the edge nodes and how users interact with them, through command line RPC or APIs. From an architecture perspective, I found this chapter particularly helpful as it does a good job of describing the trust boundary that will exist in most deployments and how this should be architected securely.

The last chapter in this section covers Cloudera Hue and to be honest I just skimmed this one as it wasn’t relevant to me.

The final section of the book covers some use cases nicely, outlining scenarios with business and security requirements, before walking through how to architect and configure the right mix of controls to meet the requirements. For me I would have loved more examples here as this is more at the level I’m working at, rather than the technical configuration. But still, great to see it presented in this way.

Overall, this was a great book that to be fair goes into a lot more depth in terms of technical configuration settings than I needed. This can make it a tough read if you’re just looking for the high level, however, if you’re setting up a Hadoop cluster then this should be your go-to book.

However, it also works great at the level I was looking for as it's got a strong focus on architecture considerations and puts the security functionality into context rather than just explaining the feature sets available. You just may need to skim some of the more detailed sections like I did!

Big data requires a big security solution. This book shows you how.

As the recent RSA Conference, there were scores of vendors offering various endpoint solutions to protect laptops, desktop and mobile devices. These software solutions are clearly needed given the value of the data on these devices.

When it comes to Hadoop, firms are storing massive amounts of data (massive as in petabytes and more); often without the same level of security they have on a laptop.

In Hadoop Security: Protecting Your Big Data Platform, authors Ben Spivey and Joey Echeverria have written an invaluable reference for anyone looking to ensure their Hadoop data sets are appropriated secured. This is the type of book that you want your Hadoop administrators to have close by.

Hadoop is one part of an open-source software framework for big data. The authors correctly note that one of the hardest jobs a Hadoop security administrator has is to keep track of how the many components handle security, access control and other authentication functions.

With that, the book does a great job in providing the reader with a thorough overview of the various aspects of the Hadoop security framework. The authors detail how to correctly configure the security features for each of the components. The authors also provide actual code segments for each of the areas.

Anyone using Hadoop should certainly make sure their staff knows about the security controls required to keep their data sets safe. For that, make sure they read Hadoop Security: Protecting Your Big Data Platform.

"Hadoop Security: Protecting Your Big Data Platform" is an excellent, well-written book which describes the new technology, Apache Hadoop and the numerous security features within Apache Hadoop that can be implemented. This book starts with a basic history of how and why Apache Hadoop was developed and then breaks down how Apache Hadoop can be secured in three (3) sections which are: 1) Security Architecture, 2) Authentication, Authorization & Accounting (AAA) and 3) Data Security. A fourth section entitled Putting It All Together summarizes the first three sections. The best thing about this book is it does a very thorough job of not only explaining the functionality of the very complex Apache Hadoop system and all it's components but also explaining how to configure the built-in security features within these components. Actual code segments that provide more details for enhancing the security for these components makes this book an excellent reference guide for any security professional. I would highly recommend adding this book to your IT Security collection if you are facing the daunting task of securing an Apache Hadoop system.

Amazing action/romance - M/M stories !!!

Book 9) You can't go wrong with this action packed, series of tremendous men, caring, accepting, and loving to their partners and team mates. In this series we don't get all the answers, but a book or two later we will see the secret revealed. This method weaves these wonderful stories together and it's amazing to discover and fun to read. So, I feel it IS important to read them in order to get all that rich storytelling at its best.
In this book we see Spencer, a cop, suffering through his recovery from losing an eye and the gunshot to his stomach, he's depressed and wished he'd died. A stranger keeps coming to visit him everyday, giving him attention and care, so when he puts him in a wheelchair to get some air, Spencer lets him. Spencer has been so drugged up, he doesn't realize he's been slipped more drugs. Terry keeps him so drugged he doesn't try to understand, he just wants to die. After two weeks, things change, and when Spencer throws up some meals, his head becomes clear and figures out this is wrong, but Spencer is so ill, fever, pain and confusion, he's nearly helpless. Meanwhile, Ruger has accepted a job with the Rescue for Hire guys, and they are looking for Spencer, who disappeared from the hospital. The cops aren't helping. Ruger recognizes the name, from their childhood, and hops on board to get Spencer found. The team's tech gurus are great and find Spencer, and he's rescued just in time from being raped by Terry. Ruger plants himself by Spencer and doesn't leave his side. He's claimed him and acts as a bodyguard until they sort this out. More time passes, and the team is supportive of Ruger and Spencer. They battle the cops bad investigating, Spencer tells his story, and Terry makes bail. Ruger takes Spencer to Cade and Jack's land and a home. With healing going well the guys finally have hot sex and do some talking. Ruger and Spencer are together, he's healing, and things are okay, but a woman shows up after his hospital check up and tries to get Spencer back to Terry, her obsessive, crazy adopted son. She was the one who helped Terry take Spencer. Spencer knocks her out. the whole story is revealed, and later the woman tells the cops where Terry is hiding, about her part in it, and loose ends are tied up. A tornado hits the town and when it's over Ruger goes to help the team rescue the school kids. He accepts a part time job with rescue, and full time with the forestry. Spencer helps Ruger with his PTSD, Ruger helps Spencer by loving him - heart and soul. As usual there is a lot more going on. We are happy to see the team members, their partners and kids, the wonderful lives they lead. This story melded a bit with the Granite County characters, too.
Great M/M sex, an interesting plot, and deep characters make this author worth reading.
Highly recommend. ENJOY !!!

Spencer and Ruger are awesome together!

Well worth the wait for Spencer's Reluctant Rescuer! Loved Ruger Black and Spencer Ryland's characters! Both are survivors and discover strength through their love. Some interesting twists with the bad guy. i highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys the Rescue for Hire stories. Always good to see the team and their partners again! Cannot wait for more stories!

4.5 Stars ~ I can't believe I am already at the next to final book in this series. Each of these men and their partners have made an impact and I've enjoyed every moment. The description for 'Spencer's Reluctant Rescuer' had me very intrigued as I got the impression this story was going to be different from all of the rest. I was right and I was wrong.

Ruger has spent way too many years doing things for his government that he suffers horrible nightmares from. On a stay in Granite City to attend the wedding of an ex-teammate, Cade approaches him with a job offer. It's different though, because it's not working directly for Rescue for Hire performing rescues and missions with the guys. Instead, Cade wants to hire Ruger to oversee all the hundreds of acres of forest land the company owns, dealing with thinning trees, replanting, and so on. It's a dream for Ruger and one he has been qualified for since he was a boy.

That dream can't begin until he helps the team rescue Spencer who disappeared from the hospital two weeks ago. Spencer and his partner were kidnapped and tortured by a drug dealer. Because of the severity of Spencer's injuries, he has been at a hospital several hours from Granite City and the sheriff wasn't notified that he'd gone missing until recently. According to the police down there Spencer left voluntarily which is kind JD of difficult for a man who still can't walk by himself. It takes Tony and Boone's mad computer skills to find a lead, and the team plus Ruger to locate and rescue Spencer.

Poor Spencer. Kidnapped and held by a man he thought was a friend but who instead abused him while keeping Spencer drugged. My heart just bled for him. First he lost his eye from the initial kidnapping and torture, not to mention being shot in the stomach and enduring extensive surgery to save his internal organs. But after not receiving the care he needs, he develops an infection in his liver and kidneys and when his kidnapper drops him on the floor when Rescue for Hire busts in, tissues tear, spreading more infection. Spencer is going to take a long time to heal.

I think this may just be my favorite love story of them all and that's saying quite a bit. Even Treble didn't affect my emotions the way Ruger did, although Treb is still my favorite. Seeing the healing these two men bring to each other was…well, it touched me in ways none of the other couples has. I loved the agreement Cade and Ruger came to as I think it'll be good for Ruger's battered soul. The best thing for Ruger is Spencer and vice versa. Excellent addition!

Bad editing (and greed?) make for a sloppy, error filled work

This study guide is shockingly badly edited! There are numerous serious, and confusing, errors in numbering of questions and answers. In some cases, the total number of "answers" fails to match up with the number of "questions." In other cases, the order of questions appears to have been changed (perhaps as one of the important changes that made it necessary to publish that new edition) but the answer order was left unchanged, resulting in substantive errors. Any half careful read by the author or editor would have fixed these things.

Comprehensive Review of Adolescence

We used this text in my social work school in 1995. Since then I have given away my copy and I'm sorry I did. The book begins with Freud and covers the works of Peter Blos, Carol Gilligan and Erik Erikson.
If you don't have the time to look into the source texts then this is a good book for you. This book gives a broad overview of adolescence and in the cases of Freud and Erikson, an in-depth treatment on the various pre-adolescent stages. Most illuminating for me was the chapter on one of America's greatest contributions to this field, Harry Stack Sullivan. His chapter on Erikson is also quite good. But, if you have the time, read some of the source books. I recommend Erikson's CHILDHOOD AND SOCIETY, IDENTITY: YOUTH AND CRISIS; Gilligan's IN A DIFFERENT VOICE, and Sullivan's THE INTERPERSONAL THEORY OF PSYCHIATRY.
