I’m Tyler Lindsey, and until recently, I had an okay apartment, an okay girlfriend, and an okay job as a bellboy at a respectable Boston hotel. And even if I could, what will happen when he finishes his business and nothing’s keeping him here anymore?

Lauren lives in Wisconsin with her partner and their two terriblecats. She's a recent transplant from a thousand miles further south, soshe still gets crazy excited about snow. When she isn't writing, she can usually be found playing video games or scouring the countrysidelooking for interesting birds.

My Review:
Wow...my first MUST-READ of 2016! This book was so good...and so unexpected.

But be warned...neither of these guys are good hero material when the book begins. In fact, that first chapter or so, I was really wondering if I would be able to keep reading. Tyler has a girlfriend who treats him AWFUL, but he sticks with her because she's a hot lay. Yeah...UGH! Serious...ugh. Then Chris is a drugged out, diva rockstar who overdoses and dies. See...I told you. When the book begins I didn't want either one of these guys to find their happy. They definitely weren't what I would consider good hero material.

But then the story went on and I fell in love with them as they both grew and evolved and cried as I realized there was no way this book could end happily. Um, did you catch that one of them is a ghost? Yeah, pretty much impossible. BUT...wow, Lauren Sattersby manages a perfect ending that made me so happy.

But before that they have to learn how to live together. Because Chris can't get more then 20 feet away from Tyler...ever. So they are together 24/7...and no one else can see or sense Chris, which causes a lot of difficulties for Tyler. There's just something a little bit crazy about having whole conversations with people that aren't really there. But then they begin to bond over things like Supernatural. :)

There were so many scenes that had me laughing out loud throughout the book and then by the end, I was literally sobbing with tears running down my cheeks. The story is beautiful and I truly loved it. This also appears to be Lauren Sattersby's first novel. Can I just say, "Wow!" She has an incredible writing future in front of her because I am a definite new fan.

If the story appeals, go buy it. It's just as good (or actually even better) than the story description makes it sound. Definitely an early contender for my top ten list for the year.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review, but I am preordering a print copy of it for my keeper shelf. Because I can guarantee you that this will be a book that I will re-read over and over again.

Lauren Sattersby nailed it with her debut book!

Rock N Soul starts out with Tyler searching all over Boston for red seedless grapes. Which seemed somewhat odd until you realize it’s the middle of the night, he’s a bellboy in a respectable hotel and there’s a rock star involved. Tyler finds the grapes, rushes back to the hotel and heads to the room to deliver the meal. Only when he gets to the room he finds the rock star, Chris Raiden, dead of an overdose, stiffing him on the tip. Tyler’s girlfriend, who is an avid fan of the band, blames Tyler and promptly dumps him. The next time Tyler goes into the hotel room, he stumbles across Chris’ ring, promptly puts it on and POOF Chris appears and now is haunting Tyler. Not the room or location like a normal ghost, but Tyler himself. Everywhere Tyler goes Chris has to go. After seeking help, they determine Chris has unfinished business that he needs to deal with. To get rid of Chris, Tyler agrees to help him out.

I’m not always a fan of ghost romances. I like my stories to have HEAs usually the live half of the romantic couple ends up dying so they can be together. Really, how do you call that a HEA? However, I found the blurb for Rock N Soul to be appealing. Emo-narcissist rock star ghost attached a bellhop who he stiffed tipping because he died? Huh??? Yes very interesting indeed. So I grabbed Lauren Sattersby’s debut book, Rock N Soul, and settle in for a read. What a surprise!

The story itself was very entertaining. Dead rock star with unfinished business haunts a bellhop who ends up helping him settle his business, and they end up falling in love. Sounds corny but actually it worked out very well. There was no instant friends/lovers here. They were both less than thrilled to find themselves stuck with each other. The progression to friends was a nice gradual one sometimes even on the comical side. I didn’t find Chris to be a complete jerk nor did I find Tyler to be a complete loser. Both had very likable layers and as they evolved into eventually being as a couple you can see them grown as people. The secondaries characters were added bonuses and, with the exception of Carmen, I enjoyed all of them. As for Carmen, two thumbs up to Eric and the ultimate revenge! LOL!!!!

Lauren Sattersby really nailed it with her debut book, Rock N Soul. Comedy, romance, laughter and tears, I ran the whole gambit of emotions. I wasn’t too sure how she was going to pull off a HEA with this story but what she came up with definitely gives me hope there are HEAs to be found in ghost romances. This book is certainly worth the read. I look for to reading more books by Ms. Sattersby!

Tyler is adrift as a bellboy in a hotel when he runs into Chris – an emo rock-star who demands some grapes. After running around trying to find them he returns to find Chris dead of an overdose. After finding and wearing Chris’ ring, he finds that he – HIMSELF – is haunted by Chris.

Chris has unfinished business – don’t we all! – and demands that Tyler help him accomplish this.

Though the two start out as mostly enemies – Tyler’s girl leaves him when she accuses him of “letting” Chris (her idol) die – and Chris is narcissitic enough not to understand why Tyler isn’t more happy to help him – they end up developing a deep relationship that helps them both find more meaning in – ironically – life.

Eventually the story comes to it’s climax as Chris finishes his business on earth and things look like they’ll need to change again, the only question is how.

First, let me say that for a debut novel – or any freakin’ novel – this was amazingly well written. I was absolutely intrigued by the blurb and found the end result to be full of ALL the emotions: laughter, tears, anger, frustration, happiness, and love.

I loved the MCs and found their personal growth to be very touching.

I’m not a huge “ghost” fan – it’s hard to reconcile the whole “dead” thing with “happy ever after”, but I’ve read some books that did this very well (ie Motel. Pool by Kim Fielding) and the blurb hooked me.

In the end there were way more things that worked for me than not.

Things that worked for me: The writing is excellent. Very well developed characters. Intriguing plot line. “Believable” conversion of ghost into lover (and HEA). Great dialog. Hot smexy scenes. Loads of feels. Tons of funny/punny moments.

Only a few things that didn’t work for me: While I appreciated the slow burn, it was already a painful book to read – the guy is dead and we know it and without an absolutely huge magic wand or creepy zombie thing , he will remain dead – so I didn’t need MORE pain – so I didn’t like seeing the hurt on Chris’ face with the trials as Tyler got involved with other men and women. Limiting this would also help to shorten it a bit as it is fairly long and I’m not sure it needs to be this long. For example, there is a bit at the beginning that began to drag where the two are “learning” about each other but reluctant to share their sexuality and dancing around the subject that I think could have been shortened.

Those little niggles took this from a VERY SOLID 5 star read to a 4.5 star for me, but it’s really a great book and I do highly recommend it.

Gail Anderson is a graphic designer, educator, and writer. She has co-authored eight books with Steven Heller, and is the recipient of the AIGA Lifetime Achievement Medal. Anderson teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and is a partner at Anderson Newton Design.

Developing page layouts and conceptual thinking already starts by hand, so why stop there?

The act of drawing, sketching and lettering by hand is enormously popular, as Pinterest and Instagram feeds have evidenced. It’s a refreshing, cheap break from solid computer work that can be integrated back into digital design via Photoshop and other e-tools. The feeling of brisk experimentation, exploring new challenges, creative discoveries, and just doing things for the love of it versus following specific directives, is both cathartic and fulfilling from a personal growth perspective. It also brings forth a unique human identity, voice or personality to the creative product. Leaving one’s own imprint is what many strive to do, moreso in this DIY age where anonymous workers of big corporations diligently build with almost no acknowledgement or notice.

Developing page layouts and conceptual thinking already starts by hand, so why stop there? This enjoyable, image-heavy collection of international packaging case studies (with a foreword by the always memorable and reflective Debbie Millman), covers a delightfully diverse range of handdrawn styles and techniques from graphic designers, illustrators and lettering artists alike. Four categories are covered, ranging from the spontaneity of DIY and the looseness of ART, to heightened details found in CRAFT and the obsessively intricate complexities of ARTISANAL works.

The best part are the numerous close-up process sketches, explorations and developmental moodboards shared at length, along with backstories of how these diverse projects came together in their own way. In some cases, photos documenting drawing, painting and lettering processes are shown with support illustration or sketches where applicable. I appreciate how the personality of each letterer’s hand was retained right to the final product, as well as some exhaustive variations that were vital to informing what the final outcome would or should become. Some might see it as a waste of time and energy to work so broadly from a design development standpoint, but every sketch is beautiful in its own way and deserves its time in the sun, especially in this manner.

And if that wasn’t enough, the book concludes with a not so little section titled, “Inside Outside the Box” with 7 pages of author Gail Anderson and Joe Newton’s super-tight lettering for the book’s four title spreads. I’d be hard-pressed to choose my favourite single version of each word, as they’ve skillfully and artfully demonstrated that although one may be a front-runner for each concept, there's always more than one way to solve a design problem. So rather than hunt around for the perfect typeface or font for your design problem, the solution might be right at hand. Or left. Or both, if you’re ambidextrous.

Absolutely loved it! A wonderful range of hand-drawn projects that I have been referencing lately and using as design inspiration. I personally love progress shots and find the evolution of a project to be the most interesting part, and this book is chock full of early sketches and ideas by the designers. SUPER inspiring!

This is an excellent book. It provides a comprehensive overview while supplying specific design applications on the topics of natural and electric lighting. It illuminates many technologies and design principles with straight forward language and clear reinforcing graphics.
I teach architectural lighting at the School of Architecture at the University of Hawaii. I have reviewed many lighting books for this class and have found the Egan and Olgyay text to be very appropriate for the beginning and advanced student as well as a very useful desk reference for design proessionals.

Somewhat Outdated Book

The version of the book that I bought was written in 1983 and is somewhat outdated. Many new types of lighting are not included (T8 flourescent, T5 flourescent, LED, etc.). Also this book is entirely in black & white, so in discussions of color topics, such as the Munsell Color System, black & white illustrations don't make sense.

However for learning the basics it is OK.

A terriffic horror story that appeals to a wide audience!

Are you a history buff? Do you like short stories? Do foreign cultures interest you? Like H.P. Lovecraft? Like horror stories?

If you answered 'yes' to any of the above, this work is for you! I cannot stress that enough! Prepare to be swept away by the well crafted and in depth depiction of the Sublime State and all it's glory as you jump into Matthew Quinn's 'Beast of the Bosporus'!!

I loved this story. As a longtime fan of the Cthullu mythos and someone who has a large interest in the Medieval period and Ottoman Empire as a whole I found this story to be amazingly detailed and fabulously constructed. It's quite clear the author has put a great ammount of research into this piece and even the little details about culture and sayings are well expanded upon. You can really feel the world of the story come alive and immerse you in this historical period!

The story itself is set in the Cthullu mythos and is an excellent contributor to the mythos. The series of course resurrects an old favorite and brings a new sense of horror and a felling of 'My God what have I done!?" when the ending rolls around! You can feel the tension building as the story progresses and how the politics of the time end up shaping the potentially cosmic consequences of what transpires.

It's a short, scary, and spectacular read! I don't want to say to much to avoid spoilers, but I highly reccoment this short story to fans of the genre!

Lovecraft in the Ottoman Empire

HP Lovecraft was fond of writing stories about men who came face to face with creatures mankind was never meant to comprehend, or gained knowledge that mankind was never meant to know. The Beast of the Bosporus is a tale very much in Lovecraft's tradition, when a desperate Grand Vizer of the Ottoman Empire attempts to summon one of the Great Old Ones.

Mathew Quinn does an excellent job of recreating the world of the Ottoman Empire, a rare stomping ground for alternate history. The key characters are all well-drawn, blending the devout with knowledge that cannot be regarded as anything other than profane. I won't give away the ending, but this is a story that practically demands expansion or a sequel. And it might just give you nightmares...

Ottomans and Outer Gods, oh my!

In the aftermath of the Battle of Lepanto, where the combined naval might of the West not only won a stunning victory against the Ottoman Navy, but has shaken Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha, whose faith in the infallibility of the Empire vanished beneath the wave's with the Sultan's fleet. Pasha, unlike many in Constantinople, sees the West advancing rapidly, and its might growing, whilst the Ottoman Empire stagnates and shrinks, and he sees the day where the West shall bring the fight to his owns shores and the idea scares him. In hopes of giving the Ottomans a weapon able to both defend the Empire and bring the West to heel, chases after dark rumors of a powerful creature of unfathomable power and might, who creates fear, madness and turmoil in those who meet his alien gaze, who rests beneath the waves, ruling a corpse-city, and Pasha believes if properly summoned, he might be made to defend his own city... of course, the will of the Outer Gods and that of man, even a Grand Vizier, rarely match.

That's right folks, Quinn has penned a Lovecraftian tale of cosmic horror, set against the backdrop of the Ottoman Empire of the 16th century, and it is a delight for fans of alternate history and the Cthulhu Mythos alike. Quinn manages to both tap into that sense of Lovecraftian horror and style so well it almost seems like old Howard Phillips penned it himself - the descriptions of the flesh-bound book of the Necronomicon, or the induced madness, or the writing tentacles masses of the famed Outer God, all makes it seem like a short story torn straight from a lost chapter of the Mythos. Top it off with a great setting amidst the hubbub of Ottoman Constantinople, both vivid and historically accurate, and the world of the story is made all the better. Top it off with some great characterization, some tense moments and a very descriptive battle between a lesser Abomination and a few ships of the Ottoman fleet in the Golden Horn and Quinn has given us another splendid story well worth the meager $0.99 price tag.
