About the Author
Steffen W. Schmidt is a professor of political science at Iowa State University. He grew up in Colombia, South America, and has studied in Colombia, Switzerland, and France. He has a B.A. from Rollins College and obtained his Ph.D. from Columbia University, New York, in public law and government. Schmidt has published fourteen books and over one hundred and thirty articles in scholarly journals and is the recipient of numerous prestigious teaching prizes, including the Amoco Award for Lifetime Career Achievement in Teaching and the Teacher of the Year award. He is a pioneer in the use of web-based and real-time video courses and is a member of the American Political Science Association's section on Computers and Multimedia. He is known as "Dr. Politics" for his extensive commentary on US politics in US and international media. He is a weekly blogger for Gannett, comments on CNN en Espanol and Univision as well as WNYC, New York. He's on Facebook (SteffenWSchmidt) and Twitter (DrPolitics).

Mack C. Shelley, II is a professor of political science and statistics at Iowa State University. After receiving his bachelor's degree from American University in Washington, DC, he went on to graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he received a master's degree in Economics and a Ph.D. in Political Science. He arrived at Iowa State in 1979. From 1993 to 2002 he served as elected co-editor of the POLICY STUDIES JOURNAL. Shelley has also published numerous articles, books, and monographs on public policy, including THE PERMANENT MAJORITY: THE CONSERVATIVE COALITION IN THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS; BIOTECHNOLOGY AND THE RESEARCH ENTERPRISE: A GUIDE TO THE LITERATURE (with William F. Woodman and Brian J. Reichel); AMERICAN PUBLIC POLICY: THE CONTEMPORARY AGENDA (with Steven G. Koven and Bert E. Swanson); and QUALITY RESEARCH IN LITERACY AND SCIENCE EDUCATION: INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES AND GOLD STANDARDS (with Larry Yore and Brian Hand).

Barbara A. Bardes is professor emerita of political science at the University of Cincinnati. She received her B.A. and M.A. from Kent State University and her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. She served as a faculty member in political science and dean of Mundelein College at Loyola University of Chicago. In 1993, she was appointed dean of Raymond Walters College of the University of Cincinnati, where she served until 2003. She returned to the political science department where she held the position of graduate director before retiring. Bardes has written articles on public and foreign policy, and women and politics. She also has co-authored DECLARATIONS OF INDEPENDENCE: WOMEN AND POLITICAL POWER IN 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN NOVELS, THINKING ABOUT PUBLIC POLICY, PUBLIC OPINION: MEASURING THE AMERICAN MIND, and AMERICAN GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS TODAY.

Lynne E. Ford is Associate Provost for Curriculum and Academic Administration and professor of political science at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. She received her B.A. from The Pennsylvania State University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in government and political behavior from the University of Maryland-College Park. Ford's teaching and research interests include women and politics, elections and voting behavior, political psychology, and civic engagement. She has written articles on women in state legislatures, the under-representation of women in political office in the American South, and work-family policy in the United States. She has also authored WOMEN AND POLITICS: THE PURSUIT OF EQUALITY and THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WOMEN AND AMERICAN POLITICS. Ford served as department chair for eight years and she has led a number of campus-wide initiatives including general education reform, faculty compensation, and civic engagement.

As Liberal as Liberal gets!!! I think they mention gay marriage in this book about 100 times!!! They also make Obama seem like the greatest president in our history!!! To me, way too much opinion and not enough facts. Only got it because it was required reading in my government class. Would rather have read The Complete Idiot's Guide to U.S. Government and Politics!!!

Great intro to past and current politics

I used this for my political science class, and I loved it. I had little experience in politics, and this proved to be an interesting read. The beyond our borders parts linked the US to the world and was a great supplement to each chapter. Pricey, but I guess it needs to be, as you can tell there was a lot of current research going on for each new edition.

Just when I received the book you can tell it has had wear and tear so hopefully there not charging me for it! There was the spine a little ripped and the back had a rip, as well. But overall FREAKING BETTER THAN PAYING SO MUCH MONEY TO BUY THIS BOOK!

About the Author

Simon Hooker's doctoral and early post-doctoral work in Oxford involved a study of novel line- and broadly-tunable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) lasers optically-pumped by a molecular fluorine laser. In 1994 he moved to Stanford University to work with Prof. Steve Harris. He returned to the UK in 1996 to take up a Royal Society University Research Fellowship and to start a new research group in the Clarendon Laboratory. He joined the faculty of Oxford's Department of Physics in 2005; he was made Reader in 2006, and Professor in 2008.

Colin Webb completed his D.Phil. at Oxford in 1964, the first research degree specifically on the topic of laser physics undertaken anywhere outside the USA. He was then recruited as a member of technical staff of Bell Laboratories, New Jersey, USA. He returned to Oxford University in 1968 to head the Laser group at the Clarendon Laboratory. In the 1970s he became a University Lecturer and Fellow of Jesus College. Until his retirement in 2002, Colin Webb was the ad hominem Professor of Laser Physics at the University of Oxford, and from 1995-1999 he was Head of Atomic and Laser Physics. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America serving as Director-at-Large from 1991-1994. In 1991 he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society, receiving its Clifford Paterson Medal and Prize in 1998. In January 2000 he was awarded an MBE for services to the UK Laser Industry.

good intro text

A good introduction to lasers physics. The reader should have a good familiarity with college level physics (including quantum mechanics) and math (calculus and differential equations). The book has a paltry coverage of laser cavities and the reader should consult a supplementary text.

For a novice like myself, I would recommend Principles of Lasers By ...

There were problem sets at the end of each chapter, but there were no solutions to the problems at the end of the book. Furthermore, almost all the problems they gave were abstract, nothing I could actually work through with a calculator. Not only did this level of abstraction made it hard to learn for me, I also gained no familiarity with what the actual values of the symbols were or should be. For a novice like myself, I would recommend Principles of Lasers By Orazio. It is much better if you are just starting out.

Excellent Architectural Research Survey Textbook

To quote author Ray Lucas, "Architecture is an ever-developing body of knowledge concerned with how we use space: how we dwell and occupy, establishing meaningful places and giving form to the world around us. The aim of this book is to assist the reader in producing research that is distinctly architectural in nature." (p.6) The book from there--in textbook style, assuming that a reader has some grounding in the discipline but not an extensive knowledge--descriptively and prescriptively explores architectural research and investigation from theory through to practice. Profusely illustrated and clearly broken down into logical, cumulative chapters, the text is a great survey of the field. I would highly recommended this book to any first-year architecture student so that he or she could gain an overview of research techniques and then I would argue the book would be of use to more advanced students or practitioners preparing papers. In short, this book is a a solid and practical addition to an architectural library.

Hidden agendas

R. C. Zaehner was an Oxford don specializing in various "Eastern" religions, such as Zoroastrianism and Hinduism. In his book "Evolution in Religion", Zaehner comes across as the classical distracted professor, who thanks his Indian hosts for driving him to the local railway station, or he would probably have taken the wrong train. The book itself consists of lectures, which sound exactly how we expect university lectures to sound like: rambling, incoherent, with a stark air of pseudo-profundity. The distracted professorial quality comes across even more in Zaehner's eclectic blend of Roman Catholicism, Teilhard, Marxism and God-knows-what-else.

According to Wikipedia, Zaehner was actually a MI6 intelligence officer in northern Iran during World War II, battling both Nazis and Communists. Later, he was training anti-Communist Albanian insurgents at Malta. The "distracted Marxist scholar" was also involved in a British attempt to overthrow left-leaning (and democratically elected) Iranian leader Mossadeq...

I admit "Evolution in Religion" is a perfect cover. I also admit that I would have felt compelled to push Mr Zaehner under one of those Indian trains at that railway station! For the Mossadeq thing, obviously. Ironically, the author was briefly under suspicion for being a double agent, working for the Soviets, but he was exonerated after an informal MI6 interrogation. Maybe somebody at the SIS actually read the don's distracted, pro-Marxist books?

And now, the book itself. As I already indicated, "Evolution is Religion" is pretty bad. It's ostensibly a comparative study of two great proponents of a spiritual-evolutionary synthesis, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Aurobindo Ghose. However, most of it is virtually unreadable due to the author's rambling, disjointed style. Zaehner seems to be a follower of Teilhard, and the most readable chapter is, I presume, an exegesis of the controversial French Jesuit's message. I admit that this was an interesting read, but it's marred by the author's worthless lecturing overall.

Zaehner identifies the Christian Trinity with the Hindu concept (found in Aurobindo) of Sat-Cit-Ananda. The Father is Sat (Being), the Son is Cit (Consciousness or the Logos, from which Sakti or the creative force emerges), and Ananda (Love) is the Holy Spirit. Creation isn't entirely ex nihilo, since matter seems to exist prior to creation in an inchoate state. By a process Zaehner somewhat daringly likens to sexual intercourse (daringly for a Christian, at least), God impregnates matter (esoterically symbolized by the Virgin Mary!) and a downward process of involution begins. At its lowest point, Spirit forgets its heavenly origins, until the arrival of humanity through a protracted process of evolution. The "Fall" was a fall from a kind of animal-like, collective unconscious to a fully individualized consciousness, a fall "upwards" which contained both new dangers and possibilities. The snake in the Garden and Yahweh are really two aspects of the same god, while Yahweh has both a masculine and a feminine side. Man's view of God (or perhaps God himself) evolves, with the God of the Old Testament still being something of a capricious bully, a bit like Rudra in Hindu mythology. The goal of evolution seems to be the creation of a communist and collectivist (but not Stalinist) society, and eventually the spiritualization of matter.

So far, Zaehner's private theology could presumably be squared with that of Sri Aurobindo. However, Zaehner believes that God has intervened directly in the evolutionary process, and that the Superman (a term derived from Aurobindo) has already arrived. The Superman, of course, is Jesus Christ. By his complete sacrifice on the cross, even to the point of destroying his own atman, and the subsequent resurrection in a glorified body, Jesus has somehow released matter from its fallen stated and helped evolution along. Jesus has also redeemed the fallen spirits, something he did by descending to Hell. Unless the old agent is hiding something, Zaehner regards the Gospel stories as (more or less) literally true. However, he also sees esoteric symbolism in the Bible, such as Jesus being a carpenter (i.e. a demiurgic refashioner of matter) sacrificed on a cross (the cross of matter, at which Spirit is "sacrificed" by its descent). The cross, of course, is made of wood, the chosen medium of the carpenter, and at one point, Zaehner actually writes that Jesus was crucified on a cross of his own making!

Exactly how Jesus has aided evolution along is less clear, since the world (at least arguably) is just as bad as it was 2,000 years ago. Zaehner acknowledges this, but believes that Jesus set new evolutionary impulses in motion. One of them is the Church, where Christ is mystically present. Zaehner feels uneasy about some aspects of Teilhard's and Aurobindo's thought. He doesn't seem to like their idea of evil as inevitable, perhaps even as somehow "good". As an evolutionist, Zaehner doesn't see any good way around it, however. In the end, he has an apocalyptic perspective, apparently also derived from Teilhard, where a good minority somehow disconnects itself from a cosmos gone completely evil...

I admit that Zaehner's theological speculations, give or take a few ideas, are similar to my own. However, due to the generally unreadable and confused character of "Evolution in Religion", I will nevertheless only give it two stars. Due to that, and to the Mossadeq thing!

The Iron Box

This was a short story ,narrated nicely by Jack Chekijian. A man is chatting with a friend in a bar and they decide to go looking for a metal box that one of them remembers finding in the woods when he was young. They encounter trouble,as is usually the case. Do they find the box? Do they both return? Listen for yourself!

Oddness in the Adirondacks

An intriguing and entertaining tale; I liked it more than I thought I would. I didnt realize there were two other stories after the title story. The second isn't and the third ok but without much of a point, for me.

Douglas L. Erwin, P.E., is a practicing process engineer for engineering design and construction companies, major refinery-operating companies, and major chemical product companies.
