Review "The Last Nazi"

A surprising historical tour de force…

As a professor of history (U.S., Western, and World Civilizations), I purchased "The Last Nazi" as what I thought would be a light summer read. I enjoy the genre of historical novels, but was wholly unprepared for the scale of historical verisimilitude that Tortolani recreates and employs in his writing. While other authors in this genre may tend to subsume historical facts in favor of their agenda of a fictitious novel and storytelling, this author almost reverses the formula, with dramatic success.

Tortolani’s "The Last Nazi" has all of the emotional impact of the sagas of Michener and Wouk. (Ironically, it appears that all three authors served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Fleet). Beyond that comparison, "Last Nazi" possesses all the key literary elements and (intrigue, plot twists, shady characters, etc.) of John le Carre’s popular historical-based spy fiction novels.

However, what truly distinguishes THIS historical novel, is Tortolani’s mastery of historical details and facts. I was tempted to think that this was an historian (doubtlessly a lover of history itself) who was looking or a vehicle to apply a knowledge that is both broad and deep. It is a rare work that can actually entertain and inform to this high of a level. The range of information woven into this work is truly impressive: from U.S. history, to WWII Europe, Asia, and even to the Palestinian-Israeli conflicts of the Middle East. While a highly enjoyable read (complete with plot twists, surprising love interests, and detailed characters and scenery), it is also a book that that challenges set beliefs--all without resorting to unwelcome revisionist historical debasement of fact.

History lessons aside, Tortolani’s writing is also extremely inviting as a novel, and I found it to be equally moving in parts. (The subtitle, "A Tale of Passion and Sorrow," is well earned in this case, especially for me as I got to the final “Epilogue”). If one gets past the occasional long-sentence structure he employs at points to weave together varied thoughts and facts, the reward is a book that is fun, moving, enjoyable, accessible, riveting, and highly informative. (Yes…even to a history professor!).

THRU TREMENDOUS RESEARCH BY THE AUTHOR WILL LEAD TO A BETTER UNDERSTAND THE EVENTS THAT LED GERMANY TO THE AGGRESSIONS THAT BROUGHT ABOUT W.W.11 THE READER WILL GET A WELL ROUNDED VIEW OF THE VERSAILLES TREATY, THE SPREAD OF COMMUNISM BETWEEN THE WARS, AND THE ISRAEL/ PALESTINE CONFLICT. THE READER WILL BE CHALLENGED ON LONG HELD BELIEFS THAT GERMANY WANTED TO CONQUER THE WORLD. IF YOU HAVE ANY INTEREST IN HISTORY, PARTICULARLY W.W.11 YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK.

Zariski. We also wish to thank Mr. R. L. Beinert and Prof. G. L. Best introduction to algebraic geometry

My advisor in graduate school told me to read this book. My office mate followed his advice. From then on, whenever I asked a question of my office mate, he stared into space searching for an answer, and then he replied, "Read Walker." In my opinion, it is the single most important book you can read if you want to become an algebraic geometer, or if you want to understand what an algebraic geometer is talking about. I am astonished to see that it is out of print. If the book has any flaws, I haven't been able to find them. Thank God for Robert J. Walker.

Awesome reference

This is an extremely exhaustive book and well worth the price. As far as I know, there exists no more comprehensive book on how every muscle interconnects in the human body -- it is truly an encylopedia of the human anatomy.
A few things keep me from giving it a 5 star review.
1: Goldfinger's illustrations are fair, but not masterful, particularly those of the human face.
2: Strangely, there are almost no fully rendered full-body illustrations or even any fully rendered "body part" illustrations -- almost all the good sketches are of isolated body parts alone. For example, there isn't any fully rendered muscular illustration that encompasses both the upper arm AND the lower arm(!) There ARE full body illustrations, but only in a more schematical form.
3: There are no "application" illustrations of the anatomy in case studies such as bending, posing, flexing, etc. Most of the examples are in prone positions.
Granted, much of this information can be taken from any number of other anatomy books, particularly Richer's "Artistic Anatomy," which this book is largely based on and I also highly recommend.
Nevertheless, as a reference guide to the human body, this book has no peer. If you truly want to understand how the muscles of the body interconnect, there is no better alternative. This book is obviously a labour of love.

this text served me extremely well as i learned figure drawing and is the best anatomical reference i have ever seen, a genuine encyclopedia of anatomy. however, artists should be warned that the approach is analytical (anatomy is broken down into its elements) rather than illustrative (anatomy is presented as pictures of different poses). goldfinger (a sculptor) attempts to explain surface form structurally, from the inside out -- starting with individual bones, then joints, then all visible muscles, facial features (eye, mouth, nose, ear), fat pads, surface veins and arteries, skin folds and finally a gallery of "mass conceptions" of the head, hand and full figure as blocks, continuous planes, cylinders, ovoids and photographed models. (some internal musculature is omitted because it does not affect surface form, but there is extensive information and photo documentation on the facial expression of emotions, largely based on the classic research by ekman and friesen.) this "inside out" approach also determines the content of the 1 to 3 page descriptions of each bone and muscle. in the section on muscles, four diagrams show the skeletal muscle attachments, isolated muscle form, form within surrounding muscles, and surface appearance in lean models, usually from two different points of view. schematic diagrams analyze muscle form into its basic shapes, or show the mechanical effects of muscle contraction. the text is often heavy going but presents unusually detailed and clear explanations of muscle attachments, action, form and interaction with other muscles or joints. there is also much information not available anywhere else, and all sex differences in anatomy (for example in the abdominal musculature and hip bones) are described in the text. goldfinger's goal is to provide the artist with the information necessary to identify the bones and muscles contributing to surface form in any model, any physique or any pose, and i have never found it to fail that purpose. for a breezier and visually more attractive approach, simblet's book is preferable.

What parts are played by our ideas concerning logic, causality, and chance? What is the significance of the rule of parsimony? How do verbal and mathematical languages compare in expressing scientific statements? The intended use of this book goes beyond these abstract questions. The discussion presented here may serve a practical role in the sociology and history of science by providing a framework for reducing the enormous variety of scientific researches--both within a given field and across all fields--to a limited number of interrelated formal elements. Such a framework, it is hoped, may prove useful in assessing empirical relationships between the formal aspects of scientific work and its substantive social, economic, political, and historical aspects. Wallace identifies four ways of generating and testing the truth of empirical statements--"authoritarian," "mystical," "logico-rational," and "scientific," and considers each in depth. As he concludes, "In science (as in æeveryday life') things must be believed to be seen, as well as seen to be believed; and questions must already be answered a little, if they are to be asked at all." This is a work of synthesis that merits close attention. It provides an area for viewing theory as something more than a review of the history of any single social science discipline. Walter L. Wallace is Professor of Sociology Emeritus at Princeton University. He is also the author of Sociological Theory: An Introduction, and Principles of Scientific Sociology, available from AldineTransaction.

Walter L. Wallace is professor emeritus in the department of sociology at Princeton University.
