About the Author
Dr. Alice Beck Kehoe attended Barnard College and Harvard University, from which she received her PhD in Anthropology. Dr. Kehoe taught at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln before teaching at Marquette University, from which she retired in 2000 as Professor Emeritus.

Kehoe has studied many aspects of Native America and is a strong believer in the theoretical link between the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex (SECC) (of the Native southeastern U.S.) and Mesoamerica (Mexico and Central America).

text is super small and the binding was so bad, it was like cheap glue that was just holding together the pages, hated the class and definitely hate this book. SHipping was speedy though

Review on N. American Indians

The book came super fast which I was very glad of because my class was going to start in a week. Also it is in very good condition. What I don't like about the actual book is that it is very preachy about how the Natives were wronged, which while true I enjoyed more the information about the pasts in early AD times of Native nations.

Recently I took an class on Native American history which used this as the textbook. Its a decent book for getting an introduction to the Nations of North America though it doesn't always go into as much detail as it could, and it tends to only focus on major events. So its nice for getting a broad picture, but not for focusing in on the finer details. As with most books on the subject, things are arranged by "culture groups" or "regions" though the opening chapter is focused on the early history, archaeology, paleo-Indians and a history of anthropology in the Americas.
From there it goes on to the Nation-states of Mexico, the Greater Southwest, the Southeast, the Northeast, the Prarie-Plains, California and the Rockies, the Pacific Northwest and the Arctic/Subarctic. Each region opens with a timeline, showing major events and focuses in on history from the archaeic periods to the modern era with a look at specific Nations thrown in. These are peppered with photographs, illustrations, maps and accounts from Native peoples themselves or looks at specific topics like Sequoyah, the Ghost Dance or peace treaties. Obviously some of these chapters are a little pressed, such as the Southwest which focuses on the ancient Hohokam, Mogollan and Anasazi civilizations alongside the Pueblos, Yumans, Yaqui, Tohono O'odham and Athapaskans (Navajo and Apache); all greatly different from one another despite living in the same "cultural area". Conversely, the chapter on the Southeast flowed more or less seemlessly through the archaeic period to the Mound Builder civilizations to the Five Civilized Nations and the Powhatan Confederacy of historic times. Closing out each chapter is a list of recommended further readings on the subject, going into further depth. I recognized some of the titles and must admit that the list is quite good.
After that it focuses in on the modern American Indian community in the United States and Canada, covering basically the whole 20th century. This is a really nice chapter, but the fact that its so small and has so much to cover really kind of irked me. Yes, I do think it was important of them to stress the pan-Indian awareness that has arisen recently, and yes the First Nations face many similar situations everywhere from the Black Hills to Nunavat to the Navajo Nation, but still each part of this continent is different and there is so much diversity that its hard to really make any general blanket statements. Even about the last 100 years. It then closes out with a short chapter on anthropology and the American Indian. This is an interesting chapter, examining things such as the languages of North America, but again a bit too short. All in all though I would have to say this was an excellent introductary text and certainly worthwhile for understanding North Americn history. Just not the best thing for particular Nations.

Excellent book for a difficult subject

This book was not only required for a class where we had to write a security policy for the term paper, I am using it for my Senior Capstone project security policy. I do not find the book wordy, as another reviewer has said. Security Policy is not that thrilling a topic, but it is necessary if you are going to be in Security Management. I do hope, however, that this book will be updated soon. Some of the info, such as all the references to ISO 17799 need to be updated to the newer ISO 27001. Much has changed in the security field since this book came out in 2006. But overall, a very helpful book if you have to actually write policies.

Useful information, but not a good textbook.

As intelligent and knowledgeable as the author is, she is not a skilled communicator and the concepts are presented in a very clumsy and verbose manner. There are also an unacceptably large number of contradictions and semantic errors. She does not seem to relate well to the university students that are the intended audience of the book. There is a lot of useful information in the book. This appears to be based on the author's considerable real world experience. However, the ISO standard the book is based upon is now out-of-date. This is a good book to use for research purposes, but is awful to use as a textbook. Critical concepts are not presented in the most concise way.

This is the first textbook that I've actually enjoyed reading! It's not John Grisham, of course; but, unlike most textbooks, the material is actually practical and informative and not overly dull.

Greene covers a full overview of security policies and general security procedures. Because the text is not particularly technical, its audience shouldn't be limited to IT or security people. It is a great resource for any manager of a small business or professional office who wants to be sure his/her office is doing whatever is necessary to keep their information secure.

This is an excellent book and I recommend it for anyone in the industry who is looking for more information regarding support of mobile cranes. Specifically structural engineers, construction engineers, even field and superintendents that would like to know more regarding this subject. I am very fascinating in religion and the art of being religious and placing ones trust and devolution in the hand of a higher being. This approach is excellent for those who are new to Wicca. I really like how Lisa Chamberlain encourages self development of one's beliefs and path. There are also a handful of spells that are suitable for the novice to practice with. If you are interested in learning to cast magic, then this book will help you get started.

A testament to the power of finding strength in weakness

This powerfully written, yet simple book changed my life! In "The Wounded Healer," Nouwen addresses one of the main challenges of the human condition- our weaknesses. These wounds, as Nouwen refers to them, are so often viewed as sources of shame and guilt for us. He reminds us all, however, that these wounds, can be transformed into strengths, if we will allow them to be.
By accepting that we are human and addressing our human weaknesses, we can then turn them into helpful resources to extend the gift of emotional healing to others. Because, in order to reach people, we need a point of connection. We can all relate to experiences of emotional woundedness, and within appropriate relational boundaries, they can become instruments of healing.
Nouwen shares several stories, and conversations that he had with persons going through various experiences of emotional woundedness. One of the most poignant of these was a visit he made to a man who was about to go in for surgery to have a leg amputated. By offering himself as a compassionate listener, he was able to help the man find peace in the midst of a devastating loss.
A point of clarification that Nouwen makes well is that becoming a wounded healer does not mean that we dump all of our problems on people, or seek to wear them like badges. Instead, by being aware of our woundedness, and facing it, we can become more sensitized to the needs of the people around us- after all we are all subject to human imperfection.
If you are ready to find hope and a renewed perspective on helping others- read this book! I would highly recommend "The Wounded Healer" to all persons in caring professions, as well as anyone who just want to find peace in the midst of human challenges.

A necessary commentary on the life of a healer

Nouwen, in this classic work, explains how in one's weakness, one can still participate in the healing of others. A major theme of most of his books, Nouwen stresses that only in one's brokenness before God and humankind can people really transform community. Admittedly, the philosophy of the wounded healer offered at the beginning and end of the book gets a little thick, but both portions offer excellent insights that make it a great read. The great benefit of the book is the clear examples offered in the middle of the text. Examples of people dealing with terminal patients and the like really clarifie the condition that Nouwen addresses. A must-read for people in the helping professions and anyone else looking to impact people!

Henri Nouwen has been blessed with true vision of the human condition. Mr. Nouwen has also been gifted with the answers to solve the condition of "Nuclear Man" and isolation. Anyone who is a minister or healer of any kind should read this book. It is a "must read". I appreciated Mr. Nouwen's synopsis' at the end of each chapter. This truly helped me to "drive the point home". I thank Mr. Nouwen for writing this book. I am presently reading his "Return of the Prodigal Son" book. Another "must read" book if one is interested in reaching the center of man.

Can't wait for the next 2 in the trilogy!

Every so often one picks up a book and for some reason it hits all of those deep buttons we try to ignore. In other words, we all like a Cinderella story even if we think we are far too sophisticated to want one! Sometimes series fiction rises above itself by being well-written and peopled with characters that get under your skin. For me, this book, despite its inane and rather juvenile title was one of those times when I was sure I was about to read something silly and shallow but I was, in fact, moved and entertained greatly.

Nurse Lizzie Bond hasn't had it easy. She works hard and lives modestly, caring for an elderly neighbour and mentally inadequate mother. When her neighbour dies, she tries to locate his family but when she does, she runs into a whole wall of contradictions. Working through them brings her close to Sean O'Banyon - Wall Street giant with a hurt soul and a heart full of angst. Seemingly opposites, Lizzie and Sean are each the missing half of the other.

This book is the first of a trilogy telling the stories of three brothers whose horrific childhood has marked each of them deeply. I, for one, can't wait for the next instalment for the author writes well, creates wonderfully well-rounded characters and tells a damned good story. Wonderful stuff!

JR Ward (aka `Jessica Bird') wrote `The billionaire next door' in 2007, the same year that `Lover Revealed' (Butch's story) and `Lover Unbound' (Vishous's book) came out.

`Billionaire next door' definitely has all the romantic characteristics we've come to expect from JR Ward. Strong Alpha male with a fractured background. Angelic heroine who pulls the hero out of his drudgery. And of course, hot sex scenes. I wasn't actually expecting such explicit sex because the book was published by Harlequin Silhouette, and for some reason I have this idea that Harlequin romance books are a little tame when it comes to the nitty gritty. The sex scenes aren't as hot and heavy as they are in the `Blackdagger' books (not so many dirty detailed descriptions - damn!) but they are sizzling and definitely add spark to Sean and Lizzie's romance.

`Billionaire next door' reminded me quite strongly of Rehvenge's book `Lover Avenged'. Rehvenge and Sean are both rich, successful Alpha males who had abusive childhoods. Elena and Lizzie are both nurses, currently experiencing tough financial times by being their single-parents soul providers - Elena's father had a form of Alzheimer's, while Lizzie's mother has some sort of mental disability. For a good portion of the book Sean keeps secret his true career and financial success from Lizzie, for a plethora of reasons - just as Rehvenge kept quiet about his being a nightclub owner (among other shady dealings).

There is a small nod to the `Blackdagger Brotherhood' during one of Sean's childhood flashbacks. He mentions that growing up his father wasn't much of a cook, and so Sean and his brothers relied on the kindness of his best friends mother. The best friend in question was one Butch O'Neal. Has to be the same cop turned vampire, right? Butch is a Southie boy who had a big family - and Sean mentions that Butch was one of five kids. Reading that small Blackdagger reference had me doing a little fan-girl squeal.

I really, really liked this book. It has all the best aspects of the Blackdagger Brotherhood, minus intense plot, heavy action and heroes vs. villains. It's just romance - boy meets girl and everything that ensues.

Perhaps the only negative thing about the book is the fact that it beautifully sets up a series (subsequent books intended to tell the story of Sean's older brother, Mick and younger brother, Billy) that by all accounts JR Ward has no real intention of continuing. It's a real shame because there is plenty of potential here - but rumour on the chat boards is that since the `Blackdagger' books blew up, Ward put the `O'Banyon Brothers' on the backburner indefinitely.

But `Jessica Bird' did write an earlier series for Harlequin, the `Moorehouse Legacy' series has 4 books, and I intend to read all of them because I was so impressed with `The Billionaire next door'.

GREAT READ! (And please finish the series!)

I really enjoyed this book. The romance was tender, the sex sizzling, the plot satisfying. I was especially touched by one scene of Sean's memories of his childhood, in which the author crafted a masterly tableau his past and how it drove and shaped him into the man he had become. But she didn't leave it there; it was just part of the arc of their journey.

I am new to J. R. Ward, and this story and all its characters were so much more than I had expected--the publisher's blurb doesn't do it justice. Will definitely be reading the other two in the series.

Update: after searching high and low for the stories of Sean's two brothers, Billy and Mac, it appears that they haven't been written. And since I just noticed the copyright date was 2007, I'm assuming that they won't be. Darn.

I came across some chat rooms from 2009 where fans were disgruntled that, apparently, J. R. Ward moved on to paranormal romance. While I definitely sympathize with their disappointment about this series not being completed, I understand the author might've wanted to do something new. I enjoy paranormal romance myself (even though I don't much get into vampire stories--even back before Twilight wore them out).

Still...it's unusual for me to enjoy a contemporary, real-world romance this much. So I sure hope that Ms. Ward will consider revisiting - and reviving - this series someday!

But soon she was hooked on alcohol and drugs, and then they owned her. She was just twelve years old when she was bundled into a car by a man in his thirties and forced to have sex with him. Soon, the gang were driving her to places where she was raped by scores of men.

Falling through the system, from social services to school, no-one was able to help her. She ‘escaped’ when she became too old for the men at nearly sixteen.

Finally a victim of the Rotherham scandal tells her story in the hope that other young girls will not fall prey to the same evil that she endured.

out of the darkness there is always a light.

Sometimes fact is more powerful than fiction. This book is proof of that and was one of the most powerfully emotional books I have ever read. For those of us that have escaped trauma and tragedy in our lives this is like an insight into the dark world that others have endured. It will take you into a place where fear rules, and that fear is directed at those who are most vulnerable in our society, children. You may not feel that this is a book you wish to read, well you should. Its not sensationalist its truth as told by someone who found herself in a world from which she could see no way out.
Sarah survived that place, she also survive3d a family tragedy that has as much place in this story as its main theme. She lost those magic years are such a short part of our lives, our teens, but she found a resilience that is beyond belief to struggle on with her life when she probably thought, 'whats the point'
I commend this book to everyone to read for its the story of many young girls who are constantly let down by those who are there to protect them. There but for, ....goes your daughter.

A shocking and harrowing read, I could not put this book down and read late into the night. It is so scary to see how these people operate right under society's nose. The lack of assistance by the police - here is SA it would even be worse - it would likely BE the police. The terror her mother went through. This young girl is a hero and her story should somehow be forced on the teenagers of today - maybe it would help open some of their eyes and if it stops one girl going down this route - it would be worthwhile. This book is worth a second read.

About the Author
My lifelong relationship with nature and natural landscapes began in the forest, fields, mountains, streams and seashores of New England. When I was 12, my family moved to California, where we explored the High Sierra, the Pacific Coast, and everything in between. I traded Henry David Thoreau's Walden Pond for John Muir's Range of Light. On cross-country road trips I captured photos on a Kodak Instamatic camera, but a year-long photography class in 8th grade introduced me to exposure and composition, and I practiced developing and printing 35 mm film. I was inspired and moved by the work of Ansel Adams and Galen Rowell, who were shooting at that time the same mountains and valleys that I was exploring, hiking, fishing, camping, backpacking, and skiing in. Upon graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, my first job was as an applications engineer for the Graphic Printing and Imaging Division at Tektronix, where I received a sound foundation in digital imaging. The arrival of affordable digital cameras promised to put the full end-to-end photographic process in the hands of any photographer with a computer, so I jumped in with both feet, eagerly adopting four new models from 2001 - 2006. My divorce in 2006 left me free to pursue photography full time. I won awards in photography contests, and licensed photos to National Geographic, Old Earth Almanac, Outdoor Photographer Magazine, and many others. I was invited to teach photography in 2009, and by 2012 my photography workshops covered several national parks, the Eastern Sierra, and night photography in the ghost town of Bodie State Historic Park. I have been living in the Eastern Sierra, not far from Bodie, since 2010. Having visited the park for decades now, I am honored to have raised over $25,000 for building stabilization in Bodie through my workshops there. We can't predict what will happen in our lives tomorrow, but we can look back and see all of the small influences and decisions that led us to where we are today. Happiness is when you wouldn't want to have arrived anywhere else. In recent years my path has often led me through and east of Ansel Adams' Yosemite, and through and north of Galen Rowell's Eastern Sierra, and that sure seems like paradise to me. It is a privilege to be able to share with you my love for California; its varied geography, ecosystems, parklands, and some of my personal favorite locations. Great book by one of my favorite photographers!

What an awesome book! I pre-ordered this without hesitation, as the author is one of my favorite photographers (I discovered him on Flickr). This book is very detailed and contains all the necessary tips to get that perfect shot.

I also own the Northern California book (it is not by the same author) and there is some overlap in the areas the books cover, but if you're into photographing California, get both books!

My favorite chapters are the ones that focus on the Eastern Sierra/Yosemite, as these are my favorite spots to visit and photograph. I even discovered some spots I didn't know about in the area -- and I thought I knew all of them! Unfortunately, I do not live in California, so I can't put this book to use until my vacations next spring and summer, so this book will be used for some planning this winter!

As much as I loathe taking books on airplanes (I use my kindle), THIS will be going in my backpack!

My only criticism is that that photos should be bigger -- most, with the exception of the chapter headers, are thumbnail size, which doesn't do justice to the author's amazing photography.

You never know where you might be in SoCal so just keep it in your car!

When I heard Jeff was releasing his book, I pre-ordered the same day. While I've never met in person, I've followed Jeff for about four years, on Facebook, Flickr and email. One of these days I hope my schedule will allow me to take one of his Bodie workshops.

I'm a California native and have frequented several of the areas covered in the book. Having taken up photography several years ago, his book is a fantastic resource with lots of information for me, as well as anyone who is interested in Souther California.

I recently returned from the Eastern Sierra and having his book along for the trip was a great asset. I'm not physically able to do long, strenous hikes, so having detailed information on the types of hikes was perfect.

Having history of the locations and detailed directions was an added bonus

Another plus is Jeff's photography, as well as the contributing photographers.

Don't hesitate to purchase, you won't be disappointed!

I am a big fan of Jeff's work and have been following it for quite some time so when he announced he was writing this book I knew I would be pre-ordering it. I do not own the other books in the series so I don't have anything to compare it with, but I really like the succinct nature of the book.
Find the area you will be traveling, scan the chapter for locations you will be photographing or want to photograph, read a bit on it and recieve some advice on getting to it and getting the best shot. Living in California myself I am constantly amazed at all of the undiscovered areas I have not been to, hopefully this book will help me see more of this beautiful state.
