Beautiful Women of North Dakota, by Billy Black, Chris Linnares

Beautiful Women of North Dakota started with an idea that came to me some years ago, sparked by my experience as a single dad raising two young girls. Noticing the tremendous emphasis on physical beauty in magazines, television, and even in my own work, I wondered how I could expose my daughters to beauty that wasn t ephemeral beauty that would inspire them and pass the test of time. As a photographer, I imagined a project that would reveal the hidden beauty of remarkable women. Some years passed, and through my desire to explore this project remained, it wasn t until my wife, Chris Linnares, a best-seller author and psychotherapist from Brazil, urged me to tell the stories of the amazing women she was meeting throughout North Dakota on her speaking tours, that the Beautiful Women of North Dakota project was born. After identifying 22 women through ads in newspapers across the state, encouraging people to nominate the The Beautiful Women of their Lives, my wife and I decided to take a road trip in a motor home to expose our three daughters to everyday women creating extraordinary lives. As we began our journey to bring to light the stories of these beautiful women, my assumptions years ago were right. Each of these women in this book have given of themselves above and beyond what is expected. Women like, Deb Dawson, that in the book represent the Beauty of Love, who is working hard to build an orphanage in Sudan, or Christine Peterson, Beauty of Service, who is leaving her two children to serve in Afghanistan. These women aren t seeking recognition. They aren t the women gracing the cover of Vogue or whose stories are featured on Entertainment Tonight. But I firmly believe that these are the women who can truly inspire our daughters not to take the easy road, but instead, like the Navajo said, choose to Walk in beauty . The photography book, Beautiful Women of North Dakota, will be released at a photo exhibition reception at the Rourke Art Museum, on November 21, 2009 . We want to give the recognition those women deserve. They will be on the red carpet giving their vivid testimonial of how our world can be a better place when we choose the path less traveled.

About the Author
Billy Black has explored the visual arts most of his adult life. After beginning his career in the newspaper business in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he returned to his hometown of Fargo North Dakota and joined Forum Communications as general manager the fifth generation of this family-owned regional media business. There he won numerous local and regional awards for his work in print and television. Today Billy is Development Director for the Forum Communications Foundation, concentrating his energy on the philanthropic outreach of his family s business. Billy s film career began with his work on the feature film, Wooly Boys. This experience inspired him to form a film production company in Los Angeles Opal Films. The company s first feature, Myron s Movie, went on to numerous film festivals including Ciniquest, one of the top ten film festivals in the world. Capturing glimpses of life on film has been a passion of mine for years. When I was first learning how to see, I took photos at a mission in Grand Forks, North Dakota for a photo class. A Native American gentleman came up to me and demanded that I give him the film. He told me that taking someone s photograph captures part of the spirit and soul of the person. I soon learned he was right. Photography has the ability to capture the spirit and this is what inspires me to take pictures. I remember every moment of the process of each of the photos I have taken. I can tell you what the place smelled like and if it was warm or cold. I felt I truly captured the spirit of the moment along with the image and at times, glimpses of the soul. I hope I can pass this insight on to the viewer. And Billy s goals continue to grow. His family background and work in the media business allowed him to recognize the power of the media to influence our thoughts, our beliefs and our decisions. This recognition inspired him to steer his career in a related direction using those same media tools to bring positive change to the world around him. And thus, the Beautiful Women of project was born.

Chris Linnares A best-selling psychotherapist and author from Brazil, Chris Linnares has touched a generation of Brazilian women with her seminars, books, DVD, radio, and acclaimed one-woman show: Divas on the Divan. She was honored with a number of awards for developing social projects such as Arte Solidária, a program that offers people in underprivileged communities access to theatre performances and lectures on the development of human potential. Chris Linnares After marrying photographer and writer, Billy Black, Chris moved to Fargo, North Dakota where she has continued her work of empowering women through the publication of her inspirational novel, Cinderella on the Couch, and a book of poetry and photography, You Deserve, a collaboration with her husband. She is the creator of Diva Dance, an uplifting mind and body experience that empowers women through Latin dance movements. Her seminars have earned rave reviews from leading companies and organizations such as Go Red, the American Heart Association, Microsoft, Nivea, Avon, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of ND, and MeritCare Hospitals. Though she left 80° and palm trees for 40 below and snowmen, Chris loves her life as a mom and stepmom in Fargo and wife of a man who shares her passions. Together they are expanding our cultural definition of beauty through the Beautiful Women project and their Dance Your Own Dance Foundation its mission to empower individuals to achieve personal and financial success and be a force for good in their communities.

Much of the infrastructure of modern society is buried below ground. Pipeline, conduits and culverts carry the services on which our economies depend and the strength and resilience of such structures is of vital importance. Larger underground construction is becoming more common in cities and towns, and in defence installations.
This book brings together the store of theoretical, analytical, experimental and design-based knowledge that has been built up on the subject of buried structures.
The author discusses the principles of soil arching, stress distribution and soil properties, as well as the design problems of static and dynamic loads, strength and safety. The stability of thin-walled buried structures receives particular attention, as does the behaviour of underground construction under localized and nuclear explosions. Test facilities and design codes of practice are reviewed, and the range of structures discussed in the book extends from thick- and thin-walled culverts, conduits and water pipelines to arches, domes, spherical shells, vertical capsules, blast shelters and thin-walled road tunnels.

British Military Intelligence in the Palestine Campaign, 1914-1918, by Yigal Sheffy

Shortly after the end of the First World War, General Sir George Macdonagh, wartime director of British Military Intelligence, revealed that Lord Allenby's victory in Palestine had never been in doubt because of the success of his intelligence service. Seventy-five years later this book explains Macdonagh's statement. Sheffy also adopts a novel approach to traditional heroes of the campaign such as T E Lawrence.

How British Intelligence evolved into a war-winning tool
By R. A Forczyk
This is a well-documented history of British intelligence in the First World War, that grew out of a PhD dissertation written by a former Israeli military intelligence officer. When the war began, British forces in Egypt had little reliable information on Turkish forces or intentions. At first, the British underestimated the ability of the Turks to attack the Suez Canal, but after a minor raid they grossly overestimated their capability. Throughout the war, British intelligence in the Mideast was hindered by both cultural bias against the Turks combined with an Anglo-Centric view that the Palestine front was a major front for the Ottoman Empire (which actually regarded the Caucusus and the Russians as the main theater of war). Several noted figures appear in the text, such as T E Lawrence (AKA "Lawrence of Arabia"), and their true roles and participation in the war are depicted without the usual colorful embellishments. Sheffy concludes that overall human intelligence (HUMINT) made little contribution to the British victory because the information provided was generally too little, too late. The one effective spy ring, the "Nili Organization" of Jews in occupied Palestine, was quickly broken up by the Turks in 1917. The only worthwhile human information came from prisoners and defectors. Sheffy claims convincingly that the most significant intelligence development brought by the war was the shift from dependence on human sources to reliance on technical means. Indeed, the British made very effective use of early imagery intelligence from aircraft and radio intercepts. By the end of the war the British had honed intelligence to the point that it could greatly contribute to the final operational campaign. Sheffy's book is well-written, if a bit dry at times, and benefits from the insights of an intelligence professional. This is a good addition to any well-rounded First World War library collection.

British Military Intelligence in the Palestine Campaign
By Daniel Pipes, Middle East Forum, Philadelphia
In 1921, just three years after the end of World War I, Great Britain's director of Military Intelligence made the astounding statement that General Allenby had won in Palestine because he "knew from his intelligence every disposition and movement of the enemy. Every one of his opponents' cards was known to him, and he was consequently able to play his own hand with the most perfect assurance. In those circumstances victory was certain." Sheffy's precise and far-ranging research pieces together in masterly fashion just how Allenby benefited from such extraordinary information about his foes. In the process, he shows not only how a key military campaign was fought and won, but also how the modern intelligence service took shape in a spontaneous and amorphous fashion. Along the way, Sheffy demonstrates the near-uselessness of human intelligence (spies, travelers, prisoners of war, et al.), dismissing the whole lot with a quote from the time: "What can agents find out about the intentions of Governments that have no notion what their own intentions are?" In contrast, technical means (air reconnaissance, radio interceptions) proved highly valuable. He establishes how the latter gave the British a much better idea of tactics than of grand strategy, and how they paid heavily for their wrong guesses about the latter. Despite their fair share of mistakes, the British intelligence operatives made a very credible start at bringing a "hitherto hidden dimension . . . into the forefront of modern warfare."

The Power of the Between: An Anthropological Odyssey, by Paul Stoller

It is the anthropologist’s fate to always be between things: countries, languages, cultures, even realities. But rather than lament this, anthropologist Paul Stoller here celebrates the creative power of the between, showing how it can transform us, changing our conceptions of who we are, what we know, and how we live in the world.
Beginning with his early days with the Peace Corps in Africa and culminating with a recent bout with cancer, The Power of the Between is an evocative account of the circuitous path Stoller’s life has taken, offering a fascinating depiction of how a career is shaped over decades of reading and research. Stoller imparts his accumulated wisdom not through grandiose pronouncements but by drawing on his gift for storytelling. Tales of his apprenticeship to a sorcerer in Niger, his studies with Claude Lévi-Strauss in Paris, and his friendships with West African street vendors in New York City accompany philosophical reflections on love, memory, power, courage, health, and illness.
Graced with Stoller’s trademark humor and narrative elegance, The Power of the Between is both the story of a distinguished career and a profound meditation on coming to terms with the impermanence of all things.

"The Power of the Between offers something truly original: a personal intellectual history that combines rigorous scholarship, engaging discussions of theory, and intimate portraits of an ethnographer in the field, at home and abroad. By stitching together the narrative of his career in anthropology with discussions of his own intellectual development along the way, Stoller demonstrates how doing anthropology and living it are, or at least should be, one and the same."--Russell Leigh Sharman, author of Nightshift NYC

The Anthropologist In Search Of A Guru
By Etienne RP
I am hesitant to criticize this book. The author, Paul Stoller, is a very likable person. He has a gift for storytelling, and writes in an easy-to-read, accessible style, while addressing complex issues that have been debated in the discipline for decades. His life story is quite unusual, and his accumulated experience clearly deserves sharing. He applies high ethical standards to his work, and is obviously concerned about the lives of peoples about whom he writes. He has a good sense of humor, and doesn't take himself too seriously. His tale is full of interesting details, unexpected twists and turns, and life lessons that convey a deep sensitivity to the human condition. He isn't the first anthropologist to offer a personal memoir mixing the intimate with the professional. Compared to Levi-Strauss's Tristes Tropiques for instance, he is both more modest and more humane, and eschews parisian intellectualism in favor of an earthly commonsense. At a time when anthropology has clearly fallen out of fashion, he reconnects the wider public with the plight of a discipline that has a direct relevance for our multicultural and cosmopolitan present.

But let's face it: as far as social science is concerned, this book has severe limitations. It paints a mythical picture of Africa, reinforcing stereotypes about the dark continent and the distant Other. It samples theories and approaches, without a firm commitment to a methodological tradition. It is self-centered on the person of the author, and it treats anthropology as a means of individual fulfillment as opposed to useful social knowledge. It remains politically ambiguous, whereas the issues Stoller addresses demand a political treatment. It straddles different types of literatures, and mixes ethnography with the autobiography, the Bildungsroman, the travelogue, the journalistic inquiry, the illness narrative, and the book of wisdom. Its ambition to present a "living anthropology" contradicts the professional ethos, which clearly distinguishes the public and the private. In sum, anthropology is what anthropologists write, within the boundaries of their discipline and subject to the review of their peers; not what they live or experience. A living anthropology seems to me a contradiction in terms.

Let's start with the first criticism of exoticism and naturalizing a mythical Africa. Paul Stoller first set foot in Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English in Tera, an isolated town west of the Niger River in the Sahel region. He returns to the Republic of Niger as a graduate student doing fieldwork in a remote village among the Songhay, a local tribe that has kept its traditions while sending emigrants to the capital and beyond. Studying divination rituals that defy his rationalist creed, he is challenged by a sorcerer who points to his misgivings: "You look, but you don't see. You listen, but you don't hear. You touch, but you don't feel." It takes him a lifetime to understand what the sorcerer meant by that riddle, and to begin to see, hear, and feel in an enlightened manner. After this fateful encounter, he enters into apprenticeship with an old sage, who teaches him the basic rules and formulas of Songhai witchcraft. Several years later, and having moved to a teaching position in the US, he uses this esoteric wisdom, and his acquired knowledge of the Songhai language, to study the life of West African traders selling their wares in a New York street market, and then to cope with the personal tragedy of cancer that makes him reassess what is really important in life. He concludes that "the sinuous path I have described in these pages has led me not to some grandiose conclusion about the nature of human being but rather to accept the ultimate impermanence of things."

The Africa Stoller describes is the Africa of the village, kept alive by ancient wisdom and pristine cultures. Even though he confesses that "even if it floats in the river for one hundred years, a log can never become a crocodile," meaning he can never turn native, he feels permanently in between cultures, and he uses "the power of the between" to develop a personal perspective on the indeterminacies and the contingency of life. He returns to his master sorcerer regularly, and follows rites of initiation that parallel his career as a scholar. The Africa he returns to seems to be stuck in time, embedded in a perpetual cycle of repetition that defies the laws of history. The village and the small town appear as isolated locales, remote from the booming cities that have come to characterize the African landscape. Indeed, the African city provides the missing link between the bush and the New York street markets that he described in a previous book, Money Has No Smell (see my review here). Enmeshed in transnational networks, the city calls for a different anthropology, straddling different life worlds and defying attempts to fix people in one place and one single identity.

Anthropology is characterized by different research traditions, both in terms of method and as a theoretical framework. These schools of thought contribute to the accumulation of knowledge, and give coherence to the overly ambitious project of building a "science of man". Paul Stoller draws from different philosophical schools--sociolinguistics, structuralism, postmodernism, phenomenology--as one would experiment with alternate medicine or new age beliefs, hopping from one to the next without a coherent plan or a directing line. He also experiments with different writing styles, adapting his textual strategy to each body of fieldwork material he is gathering. His cultural background clearly shows in this eclecticism: he came of age in the hippie counterculture of the seventies, when one would drive a Volkswagen from Texas to San Francisco and get stoned along the way. As in his African odyssey, he is in search of the ultimate guru, the person who will reveal the deep meaning of life. His scholarly path takes him "far and wide in search of explanations, knowledge, and wisdom". He claims this eclecticism and humility as a virtue. But his modesty prevents him to offer his own theoretical synthesis, and to compete with the giants of the discipline in order to leave his imprint on accumulated knowledge. He presents himself as a disciple of various masters, but gives no hint as to whether his teaching has led others to follow his path of scholarly wisdom. He may be a master storyteller; but an intellectual hero he is not.

Trying to make sense of apparently irrational beliefs, his first impulse was to turn to structuralism and to uncover abstract patterns and categories that underly all social and cultural diversity. His early heroes are Noam Chomsky and Claude Levi-Strauss, who believed in a singular rationality founded upon transcendent principles of logic that are universally applicable no matter the sociocultural context. His PhD thesis, based on his fieldwork among the Songhay, focuses on how language is used in the competition for power. Spending a year in Paris at the Laboratoire d'anthropologie sociale headed by Levi-Strauss, he doesn't find answers to his quest for the ultimate truth ("what is structuralism?", he asks another member of the laboratory, who answers laughingly that "no one around here really knows"), but he discovers alternative truths by attending the lectures of Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault at the College de France. This leads him "to cast critical doubt on rationalist projects in which universal principles rendered invisible and insignificant local cultural realities."

He then turns to Clifford Geertz and his "anti-anti relativism", which he defines as "an attempt to temper relativism with good sense". Philosophically, he is drawn to phenomenology, "an attempt to describe human consciousness in its lived immediacy before it is subject to theoretical elaboration or conceptual systematizing." He is also influenced by postmodernist ambitions to clear disciplinary spaces for "experiments" in ethnographic expressions, with narrative ethnographies that featured dialogue, characterization, and plot. He publishes a couple of novels along the way. He also maintains his youthful commitment to Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialism as a philosophy of life and to Andre Breton's surrealism as a form of artistic expression. Faced with the challenge of writing texts that reflects his variegated experience, he concludes that "there is no one way to write an ethnographic text. Each body of ethnographic material is unique and therefore requires a specifically contoured textual strategy."

Some people think anthropology is here to save the world; Stoller believes anthropology is here to save the self. He looks to spiritual truth as a means for self-accomplishment, the way he practices yoga to maintain physical wellbeing. He agrees that anthropology can serve useful social purposes, but for him the individual is paramount. Other people had higher ambitions for the discipline. Emile Durkheim, the leader of the French school of sociology, famously declared that "our research efforts would not be worth one hour of trouble if they had no other interest than a merely speculative one." Similarly, Stoller keeps his politics to himself, which is not necessarily a bad thing. But one would have liked him to draw political conclusions from his research, whether in terms of assessing the postcolonial present in Africa, of challenging American immigration policies that leave so many African migrants as unregistered aliens, or of linking the plight of cancer patients to US healthcare system reform initiatives. He concludes his illness narrative by stating: "I now believe that one of our most important obligation is to use our skills to bear witness." But the witness he presents is always an individual: there is no place for a "we" or for a collective endeavor in his narrative.

Readers may not agree with all the critiques presented above. I may have been a bit unfair: I have to confess that I liked the book, and that reading it made me think hard about the goals and methods of anthropology. Many limitations that I pointed out are not Stoller's own, and may characterize modern anthropology as it is practiced in the US. Social scientists writing from their ivory tower have little incentive to engage in collective work. At least Paul Stoller made the effort to go "out there", and to challenge his own Western assumptions in order to understand how people tick. Quote Geertz: "If we wanted home truths, we should have stayed at home." Against the excesses of multi-sited ethnographies that sample terrains without setting up tent anywhere, I fully subscribe to his remark that in order to "understand contemporary worlds scholars must opt for dwelling rather than travel, for theory shaped by data rather than vignette." But his odyssey bears the mark of a time when counterculture kids would hit the road in search of the ultimate wisdom. Judged from a contemporary perspective, his attempt to find a personal guru seems out of date, and his modest ambition to pose as one is overstretched.

Bloody Stalingrad: The Trilogy (Bloodied Wehrmacht), by Andrew McGregor

November 1942: The Eastern Front

The trilogy of three books set in the final months of the most vicious battle in history.

Leutnant Hausser, a young experienced German infantry officer with the 76th Infantry Division is assigned with a handful of men to the south of Stalingrad. As the fighting heightens in the city, the officer and his men bolster the defences of their allies, the Romanians, on a relatively quiet part of the front.

As the Germans strip their flanks and move units into the city in a desperate attempt to clinch victory, the Russian Red Army prepares a massive offensive designed to trap their enemy in Stalingrad.

As the Russian offensive is launched, smashing through the flanks to the north and south of the freezing city, small units of survivors desperately try and escape the Russian onslaught. Not many will make it.

The battle for the city will continue in the bitterest conditions, the trapped Axis forces struggling against cold, hunger and a vengeful enemy, hell-bent on their destruction.

The German air force, the Luftwaffe, attempt to supply the city from the air. Failing to consider the distance, miserable conditions and roaming Russian fighters and anti-aircraft fire.

Erich Von Manstein, the German Field Marshall is ordered to break through to the frozen city on the banks of the Volga River, the relief effort (Operation Winter Storm) struggling against Russian forces deployed between them and their goal.

Leutnant Hausser and his small squad continue their battle for survival, the rations and ammunition cut, the weather unbearably miserable, their enemy becoming increasingly more powerful and a hunger gnawing at their stomachs.

Russian food kitchens are moved near the front lines, ensuring their starving enemy can smell the hot meals provided for their soldiers. The Germans and their allies are down to 1000 calories a day, the city rationing providing limited bread, soup and horse flesh.

Loudspeakers deployed across the front sound a clock ticking, a voice announcing that ‘Every seven seconds a German soldier dies in Russia.’ The loudspeakers play twenty four hours a day.

Having spent thirty years studying World War 2 and in particular, the Russian Front, these offerings are based on historical fact. The characters are fictitious, attempting to portray a realistic account of what the battle would have been like for individual soldiers.

All units and actions are in accordance with actual events, including propaganda, deployment and individual division engagements. Snipers, aircraft, artillery and tank actions are all included.

Bloody Stalingrad is the trilogy of Bloody Iced Bullet, Bloody Rattenkrieg and Bloody Kessel.

The author aims to provide a thoroughly enjoyable and imaginative reading experience at an affordable price for the reader. All three works from the author's World War 2 Series concentrating on Stalingrad have achieved Best Seller status on Amazon in the UK and many more stories are outlined.

Imagination is personal, free and to be cherished.

Excellent fictional account of combat on the Eastern Front
By TJ Diamond
Gritty and determined. An excellent story of a squad of German and allied soldiers fighting j n Stalingrad. Not much fiction is written about this brutal and tragic episode of the war. McGregor does a wonderful job of introducing the historic context and presenting these intriguing characters. I look forward to reading more about this squad.

A completely different perspective on the war from an American reader.
By James McCurdy
It was difficult for me to put this book down as reading usually helps me to sleep. Not so with this book. I now look forward to author's other books. The only difficulty I encountered was deciphering some of the German language used. An appendix listing equipment, weapons, and other reference hardware would also have been useful.

Fantastic writing
By Amazon Customer
This is the third book I have read about this battle and it is as good as the other two. The others being the more celebrated of them. One having been made into a movie. This book is a much more graphic depiction of the appalling conditions Hitler made his army suffer. Plus this book wasn't centered on any snipers.

  • Isolate services in containers to have a fully modularized and portable system.
  • Step-by-step tutorials that take you through the process of creating your own PaaS.
Who This Book Is For

This book is intended for those who want to take full advantage of separating services into module containers and connect them to form a complete platform. It will give you all the insights and knowledge needed to run your own PaaS.

What You Will Learn
  • Create your own custom Docker images to fit your needs
  • Host your Docker repositories on GitHub and publicly publish them on Docker Registry Hub
  • Separate data from services using data volume containers
  • Install Docker on any platform including Amazon EC 2
  • Pass parameters to your containers when they start, to load different configurations
  • Export and back up data from shared data volume containers
  • Reverse proxy traffic to the right container using Nginx
In Detail

Docker is a great tool in many ways for developers and people in DevOps.

We begin by learning how easy it is to create and publish your own customized Docker images and making them available to everyone. We also see how practical it is to separate every service to its own container. When you have published separated service containers, the process of running all kinds of platforms in the same server is a walk in the park.

This book walks you through a use case project that will teach you how to customize and create your own Docker image, allowing you to run any platform you want. The project evolves throughout the book and emerges as a complete three containers Wordpress/MySQL platform when finished.

By the end of the book, you will know how to create such a container on a Wordpress/MySQL platform, among others.

Practical guide for dockerizing a LAMP stack
By Stephan Hochhaus
Containerization is all the hype in 2015 and so I decided to dive into the specifics by migrating a LAMP stack to Docker. This book is one of the few sources that covered most - but not all - of my questions in the process.

Build your own PaaS with Docker is a rather short (~120 pages) introduction for developers and sysadmins new to containerized deployments. One of the most important aspects for me was the discussion of how to let containers communicate between each other - the way a webserver and a database container are used in the book.

What does the book cover?

Chapter 1 is a general introduction to the topic and it covers a trivial hello world example. I must admit I was only able to appreciate the things it taught me when I re-read it after having understood Docker better. I skipped the installation instructions as that isn't too complicated by itself.

Chapter 2 is about the fundamental aspects of Docker: images, containers, and the CLI commands. In the third chapter a new image running Wordpress is created, stepping through the creation of a Dockerfile. Chapter 4 on data containers was a little hard for me to understand as it is. I am still not 100% sure on how to come up with an architecture where to run app containers and which data containers I should define and how a best-practice backup routine would look like.
In chapter 5 containers are connected. This also (briefly) introduces Compose. Using a reverse proxy is covered in chapter 6 and discusses both nginx and haproxy. Finally, chapter 7 goes into the details of how to deploy applications. Unfortunately it does not cover performing updates (e.g. using the concept of immutable servers), which I needed to figure out myself. I do not consider chapter 8 to be on the same level as the others, it merely introduces the concept of 12-facter-apps and gives an overview of the (quickly changing) tool landscape for Docker.

Overall I am satisfied with the book, it gave me much better insight and understanding of fundamental Docker techniques. I guess a single book (especially with just 120 pages) is capable of covering all areas. As such I give it four stars because it is very hands-on and useful to go into practice with a dockerized LAMP stack.

Highlights

For the the example was extremely real-world oriented and I was able to set up my own LAMP stack consisting of dedicated containers per component. The writing is straight-forward and includes the essentials needed to understand what and how to do it.

Lowlights

There are very few conceptual graphics explaining Docker throughout the book. I would have liked to see more - such as how images and containers are related or how connected containers communicate. Only in chapter 6 some of those conceptual images are present, the rest are screenshots.

Easy to read with extremely valuable information not just on Docker but other topics as well.
By Marvin Oey
This is a great book for anyone just wanting to get started with containerization. Starts off with the basics of installing on three different platforms - Linux, Mac and Windows. In addition, it also provides great information on getting started with Amazon Web Services. To no fault of the author or publisher, I gave only four stars because it was a bit behind; however, you have to take into account the speed at which this technology is advancing. One thing I really liked is the book goes into reverse proxy and provides to different implementations - HAProxy and nginx.

Useful tutorials on Docker and related tools
By David Nunez
This book is short, and though very useful, doesn't have the best ramp-up into Docker of the books out there. It's great if you come into it already established in dev-ops and have an intermediate level skill set in server administration and network maintenance, but not the best starter for you if not. I think its fair to dock it a little on that shortcoming because neither the packt-pub official page, the book's preface, and first chapter outline the prerequisite skill set of the intended reader. Because it's marked as a "Learning" level of difficulty and because the "who this is for" is very brief and mentions only a generally interested reader (the preface appends on "developers" as the target audience, even though the book is full of mostly wordpress related docker examples), a developer without any server/networking administration background (or one that is 10+ years old), will find themselves referring to external sources to fill in the knowledge gaps needed to approach this "Learning" level book. That was the only thing keeping it five-star worthy, in my opinion, as the book was still excellent.

The author outlines several tutorials for getting yourself set up with these technologies, and has a coherent tone that's easy to follow. Again, though basic familiarity with dev ops and networking/server administration is assumed, the walk-throughs are great for those of us new to Docker. He covers setups through not only Docker, but Amazon Web Services and publishing to GitHub. I feel this book is very useful because it helps you understand the whole Docker ecosystem and the additional tools that are its dependencies, without assuming prior knowledge. He tours you through basic usage of these tools and some of the most useful command-line switches, and even describes many ancillary software tools and add-ons, helping you to understand how rich the whole ecosystem is.

Overall it was a great read and is full of useful references that I've referred back to several times, as it contains some of the most straightforward walk-throughs of setup and usage of docker-related tools.

Review
Of the 33 students in one of our IGCSE extended Maths class last year, 25 got A passes (including 8 A*'s with one student on 100%) which is a credit to the comprehensive quality of the Rayner textbook. Mathematics Teacher, New Zealand Best Maths book for Extended IGCSE. I really like this book. My son was struggling with Maths and was getting about 35% in Core Maths tests. For his intended career he needs to have good Maths grades so we decided to get this book and work through it slowly. He is now scoring above 80% for Extended Maths tests. Any type of question you can possibly imagine could be asked in an exam is in this book. Each chapter starts with a few examples or Maths facts/formulas, then the exercises start with simple questions. The exercises get progressively more challenging, sometimes requiring searching other books or Internet for help. The end of each chapter has real exam questions that have appeared in the past. Fantastic Retelling!
By DanaSquare
The Beast is a steampunk fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairytale and my favorite Disney movie. This is Lindsay Mead's debut novel and I have been eagerly awaiting its release. This is definitely a book that I will be pushing on people as much as possible. I was absorbed into this book from page one and read it very fast. I think this book is fantastic and an incredible start to a series.

I really liked the characterization of Gaston. I felt like he was more of a three dimensional in this book than I have ever seen in other stories. That being said I think the one thing that is holding me back from giving this book 5 stars is that the majority of the side characters were very flat and not very memorable. Even Belle and Aleksander could have had more depth to their characters.

I loved how action packed this story is right from the get go; Belle is kickass. The idea of hellhounds and Beauty and the Beast is just fantastic; it works so well. I haven't read much steampunk, but I loved this. It was just cool.

The fantasy aspects to this story were wonderful. I loved the mixture of mythology used in the story from Norse, to Greek, to the use of Catholicism and even it being alternative history. It was really interesting and I enjoyed reading about how all of this intertwined really well. I really like that it isn't a straight forward retelling as you read on through the story there is a lot of inspiration from Beauty and the Beast.

The romance was great. It really drew me even more into the story. I can't wait to see even more of Belle and Aleksander's relationship in The Beauty. It was really swoonworthy and I hope we still more growth to their relationship because it did happen very fast.

Fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses will really enjoy this book. This was a great fantasy read that really kicked me out of a reading slump. It is a fantastic debut and I can't wait to read Lindsay Mead's next book.

The Beast BOOK REVIEW!!!
By Dorky Girl
In the land of Glace cursed humans roam the lands in the form of wolf like creatures...

Belle doesn't really remember a time when the hunters weren't needed. Large beasts known as hellhounds threaten the people of Glace to the point where hunters are a necessity. Following in the footsteps of her mother and her father Henri who is the head of the hunters Belle has wanted nothing more than to be a hunter and she is good at it. Everything was the normal grind with the hunters until Belle's father Henri decides to go to an inventers fair in another town. Everything was planned out, Henri was to take his own band of hunters with him to help protect against the hellhounds during his travel. Everything should have gone smoothly until Henri's group was attacked and overrun with hellhounds killing all of Heri's group of hunters and making him flee to the nearest place of refuge.

Belle followed the tracks in the snow left by her father all the way up to the large gates of a castle. There shouldn't have been people this far out in Glace who weren't cursed but Belle was shocked to find the castle quite crowded with people and they didn't seem to happy to see Belle. The castle takes Belle in on the orders of the Prince allowing her to see her father who was being kept in the dungeon. Seeing that Henri was injured and sick Belle asked to switch places with him which was accepted leading to Henri's freedom. Belle was kept in the dungeon only for a short while to see if she was cursed then she was moved to her own room at the request of the Prince and was fussed over by the staff. Belle was getting comfortable in her new room, then the moon dreams started showing her a handsome Prince with the ability to enter dreams. In the moon dreams Belle quickly learns that the Prince's land was cursed by a woman which turned all of it's population into hellhounds, the only place that was spared was the castle but those within can't leave and the Prince is trapped as well. The Prince needs Belle's help to try and fix his lands as well as to free himself which she gives her service over willingly but Belle can't shake the feeling that she might be falling for this secretive Prince.

Is the secretive Prince's secrets to much for Belle or will their love for each other conquer all even the cursed....

Thoughts: I love Beauty and the Beast and this retelling was really good and a version that I had been waiting for. I have always pictured the story to be like this so I am very happy that someone has finally taken the picture and made it into something more! I really liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes fairy tales but is looking for that special something. My only problem with the book was there were some typing errors but being as this was the author's first novel I just looked over them since the story was still a good one.

Quotes:

" Death freed Them."

" If I never lived another free day in my life, this night would last me till my dying day."

" Your love will not be an easy one," Henri said, Though more to himself. A smile dance on her lips as she imagined it. "but it would be grand."

" Our love may be new, but one day it will be grand."

So happy for this book to finally come out after months ...
By Daniel Osborn
What can I not say about this book. So happy for this book to finally come out after months of anticipation. I am a huge fairy tale retelling person This is a retelling of the classic Beauty and The Beast. Beware this isn't your average Disney movie version. Hellhound as the beasts are called in this story has cursed through Glacé. Belle not your typical female was taught how to fight these creatures as an early child after her mother was killed. She was eventually made a hunter by the Catholic Church and made leader by her father of all the hunters being present at any new hunters ceremony. One of those hunters is of course named Gastone. This retelling has everything from the original fairy tale like Belles love of books and her fathers love for machinery which brings a great steampunk genre into the story as well. Of course when an attack by the hounds kills a person from her fathers scouting party and Belle left searching for him finds her way into the Beasts castle. Through books and moon dreams do we figure out the Beasts real identity. This book had me turning pages from the beginning and wanting more after I finished it. Does the curse of the hellhound end and everything becomes happily ever after I'll leave the ending for you to read. Thank you my friend for a wonderful adventure. Can't wait for book 2.
