Not your regular gardening book
By manfrmlab
This is a wonderful collection of time-honored techniques to keep soil fertile without the need to buy fertilizers. The book reads as if an old farmer is telling you how he works the land, when he plants and the key issues to look out for that do not help, or degrade the land. I am very familiar with different clovers and catch crops, but the very simple manner that is used to lay out the process was amazing. The seamless nature of planting crop after crop to insure the land remained fertile was refreshing. One could readily identify a couple grasses or cash crops to grow whether you had livestock or not. The author did include information on commercial fertilizers and homemade mixtures to augment solis and I was pleased that it was near the end so the natural flow of planting to generate good tilthe and productiveness of soils could be appreciated. I decided that I would read the book and re-read it later to make planting notes. If you couldn't tell, I really enjoyed this book.

Timeless information.
By Dirk Walden
For a book written at the turn of the century, 1910 I think. Its a very good book, the information is still very relevant in this day and age. Especially if you are interested in doing things with no or minimal chemical inputs. Also the fact that some farmers are going back to actual horse power this book is helpful. Also he works on the Old MacDonald farm model since that was what was the standard at the time.
The Kindle dictionary feature is very helpful when reading this book. I am pretty well read but my turn of the century English is not so good. Ha ha.

Land and Wine: The French Terroir, by Charles Frankel

For centuries, France has long been the world’s greatest wine-producing country. Its wines are the global gold standard, prized by collectors, and its winemaking regions each offer unique tasting experiences, from the spice of Bordeaux to the berry notes of the Loire Valley. Although grape variety, climate, and the skill of the winemaker are essential in making good wine, the foundation of a wine’s character is the soil in which its grapes are grown. Who could better guide us through the relationship between the French land and the wine than a geologist, someone who deeply understands the science behind the soil? Enter scientist Charles Frankel.

In Land and Wine, Frankel takes readers on a tour of the French winemaking regions to illustrate how the soil, underlying bedrock, relief, and microclimate shape the personality of a wine. The book’s twelve chapters each focus in depth on a different region, including the Loire Valley, Alsace, Burgundy, Champagne, Provence, the Rhône valley, and Bordeaux, to explore the full meaning of terroir.  In this approachable guide, Frankel describes how Cabernet Franc takes on a completely different character depending on whether it is grown on gravel or limestone; how Sauvignon yields three different products in the hills of Sancerre when rooted in limestone, marl, or flint; how Pinot Noir will give radically different wines on a single hill in Burgundy as the vines progress upslope; and how the soil of each château in Bordeaux has a say in the blend ratios of Merlot and Cabernet-Sauvignon. Land and Wine provides a detailed understanding of the variety of French wine as well as a look at the geological history of France, complete with volcanic eruptions, a parade of dinosaurs, and a menagerie of evolution that has left its fossils flavoring the vineyards.

Both the uninitiated wine drinker and the confirmed oenophile will find much to savor in this fun guide that Frankel has spiked with anecdotes about winemakers and historic wine enthusiasts—revealing which kings, poets, and philosophers liked which wines best—while offering travel tips and itineraries for visiting the wineries today.

Review
“Geologist Charles Frankel’s Land and Wine: The French Terroir is not so  much a scientific exposé as it is a beautifully described love triangle involving wine, rocks, and French history. With stories of Charles the Fat (839 to 888 CE), Philip the Bold (1342 to 1404), and Joan of Arc (1412 to 1431), each a contributor to the development of different wine regions, one cannot help but be entranced by this delightful interplay of history, wine, and the geologic evolution of the European continent.” (Science)

“Charles Frankel’s Land and Wine recounts the story of wine in France from a unique geological perspective, highlighting the influence of the land and soil on the quality and style of the wines. In doing so, Frankel demystifies the idea of ‘terroir’ and offers approachable anecdotes that will entertain and appeal to wine enthusiasts. “
(James Lawther, Decanter)

“A celebration of both science and art, the book demystifies the perplexities of wine—and the pretensions of so much wine-writing—in a manner as refreshing to the reader as tasting a crisp bottle of Sancerre, while learning its origins lie deep in Jurassic, Cretaneous, and Tertiary bedrock.” (John Varriano, from the Foreword)

“Can one really relate geology to taste? Most certainly. Land and Wine: The French Terroir is an intriguing book. For those who love dinosaurs and drinking wine, or who seek to gain deeper, more profoundly thoughtful and complex pleasures from within a bottle, this book is a must read.” (Marc Millon, author of Wine: A Global History)

“Not just another wine book, this volume by French geologist Frankel is about the geology that differentiates one French wine from another. . . . This work will cultivate oenophiles’ interest in geology and vice versa. Both a fascinating introduction to the geology of France that will satisfy wine lovers with plentiful descriptions of beverages and wineries and a perfect textbook for anyone pursuing a sommelier’s pin.” (Library Journal)

“Frankel takes readers on what might be called a tour de terroir, a swift, chatty, and generally readable survey of French wherenesses, the famous and not-so-famous places where French fine wine is sourced.” (Boston Globe)

“A geologist by profession, Frankel has a fluent amateur’s enthusiasm for a tour around a vineyard; managing to find plenty of viticulteurs for inclusion in the book as keen as he is, displaying their soils and subsoils in proud tasting-room glass cases. Frankel tours France’s wine-making regions not following Hugh Johnson & Jancis Robinson’s canonical and gazillion-selling Wine Atlas, but instead using as a guide the eras of geological time. Sounds a bit academic and dull? It’s definitely not.” (Independent)

“I have never encountered a book quite like this one. In careful detail, it tells the geological history of France, at each point linking the character of the country’s wines to the underlying geology of the land on which the grapes are grown. The story proceeds chronologically, starting 500 million years ago, when great oceans were swallowed up during tectonic shifts, and ends just 10,000 years ago, at the moment when the Strait of Gibraltar broke open and the Mediterranean ceased to be an inland sea. Throughout, one is struck by the violence and diversity of geological change and by the overarching lesson that few things are as essential to a place as its terroir.” (Foreign Affairs)

About the Author
Born in Paris, Charles Frankel is a science writer and lecturer specializing in geology and planetary exploration. His books include The End of the Dinosaurs: Chicxulub Crater and Mass Extinctions and Worlds on Fire.

This is an absolutely great book. It lifts the concept of terroir out of its local roots and into the realm of basic common sense. A great gift for anyone who likes wine, science, France or life.

Well grounded and spirited discussion of French wines
By Phil K.
A great book to connect French wines with the terrior. The wine info is accurate an intimate...describing wines from the area in general and small specific vineyards and wine makers are also included. The geology (Charles Frankel is a geologist) is sometimes repetitive. He describes each wine region in total (meaning you can really read each chapter separately) instead of giving an overview for all of France and then specific differences for each wine region. I am a wine lover and not a geologist and I found the book to be very interesting. The geology is explained in simple enough terms. I did eventually create me own time line to help me keep straight if France was under water, above water, or somewhere between the two. The book was originally written in French and recently translated to English While the translation is excellent, there are a few things that jar the reader. Frankel talks about the "climates" in Burgundy instead of the retaining the oft-used French word "climats." He also refers to yeast as a bacterium. But these are minor problems. Overall, a really nice book for anyone who wants to learn more about French wines or who wants to add a bit of depth to their knowledge of French wines.

a lovely guide
By Renato Baserga
this is by far the best guide to t he wines of France t hat I have ever read. Charles Frankel, a paleontologist, surveys all the best places (most of them?) where they grow wine in France, without forgetting, here and there, to forget his dinosaurs. The guide gains by both, because it gives an idea of the terroir and the quality of the grapes. Every section is well done and explained. I suspect that Frankel favors slightly the Bordeaux wines even over the Bourgogne ones, but I may be wrong. In any case, you are not wrong if you do like him, like them both, as one should. But every section is attractive, and you fall in love as easily with the section on t he Rhone wines, or the advantages of Chablis.. A lovely guide, written by a competent person with a great love for the best of French wines.

Paradox (The MIT Press Essential Knowledge series), by Margaret Cuonzo

Thinkers have been fascinated by paradox since long before Aristotle grappled with Zeno's. In this volume in The MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Margaret Cuonzo explores paradoxes and the strategies used to solve them. She finds that paradoxes are more than mere puzzles but can prompt new ways of thinking. A paradox can be defined as a set of mutually inconsistent claims, each of which seems true. Paradoxes emerge not just in salons and ivory towers but in everyday life. (An Internet search for "paradox" brings forth a picture of an ashtray with a "no smoking" symbol inscribed on it.) Proposing solutions, Cuonzo writes, is a natural response to paradoxes. She invites us to rethink paradoxes by focusing on strategies for solving them, arguing that there is much to be learned from this, regardless of whether any of the more powerful paradoxes is even capable of solution.

Cuonzo offers a catalog of paradox-solving strategies -- including the Preemptive-Strike (questioning the paradox itself), the Odd-Guy-Out (calling one of the assumptions into question), and the You-Can't-Get-There-from-Here (denying the validity of the reasoning). She argues that certain types of solutions work better in some contexts than others, and that as paradoxicality increases, the success of certain strategies grows more unlikely. Cuonzo shows that the processes of paradox generation and solution proposal are interesting and important ones. Discovering a paradox leads to advances in knowledge: new science often stems from attempts to solve paradoxes, and the concepts used in the new sciences lead to new paradoxes. As Niels Bohr wrote, "How wonderful that we have met with a paradox. Now we have some hope of making progress."

Paradox
By Steven C. Thedford
I enjoyed reading Paradox even though much of material was above my head. Yet, I learned about subjective probability, the degree to which one believes something and I will use it my classes that I teach to high school students. Also, paradoxes-read about the book to learn about some famous paradoxes- make you pause and think, which provide humans the opportunity to consider other ideas and grow.

Difficult to use as a reference
By Sandy Lemberg
This book seems to be a good value at $12 for 225 pages. Be advised, however, that it is smaller than standard size at 5 x 7 inches.

The book appears to have a lot of good information. Unfortunately, it has effectively no table of contents --- only 3 chapters listed for the 225 pages. This makes it very difficult to use as a reference --- especially given the unusual structure of the book. I find this flaw to be nearly fatal.

Nevertheless, in view of the low cost for a substantial amount of content, you may find the book worth buying. I recommend checking out a library copy first, as I have done.

The plot line was fine, but the pacing was really choppy and a little difficult to follow. Will try another one.
